Learning Support

Catholic Education has always had a special concern for those in need and experiencing difficulty. The Learning Support Team at Caroline Chisholm College is concerned for students who may at times find learning at school difficult. The Learning Support Team works with classroom teachers to provide a variety of assistance to students at the college.

Some of the assistance offered to students includes

  • Personal Plans which are collaborative processes initiated by the school to support students with disabilities which impact on learning. The process involves a meeting so key parties can plan together what is required to achieve the desired outcomes for the student. 
  • Teacher-assistants who work both in and outside classrooms with students with diagnosed disabilities who are eligible for support through the Special Learning Needs program. Commonwealth Government funding allows for Learning Support teacher-assistants to support the student in the classroom.
  • Remedial programs in literacy and numeracy for students who struggle in these areas 
  • Special examination provisions such as a reader, writer, coloured paper and extra time are offered to students that qualify under the guidelines set by the Board of Studies. These provisions allow students to achieve outcomes in examinations based on their knowledge and to ensure they are not disadvantaged by their disability.  
  • Various programs for individual students who may be disengaging from school or who are considering transitioning to the workforce or other training at the end of Year 10. Such programs include the Youth Connections Program, transition training courses, work placement and the Fast Track work readiness program offered to selected students with Learning Support needs in Year 10.

Additionally, Caroline Chisholm College works closely with Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta. Support offered includes:

  • Educational psychologists who are engaged for psychometric assessments of students at no cost to parents.
  • Speech pathologists who are engaged for re-assessments on students at no cost to parents.
  • Itinerant teachers who are assigned to students if they have a vision or hearing impairment.
  • A Transition Liaison Officer who attends Individual Learning Plan meetings to assist the Learning Support Teacher when a student wants to transfer to the work force or to TAFE at the completion of her studies.
