The ceramic works of six students from Caroline Chisholm College, Glenmore Park’s Year 10 Ceramics unit, ‘Notanda’, have been selected for a special exhibition in the Penrith Regional Gallery.
Director of the Penrith Regional Gallery and the Lewers Bequest, Dr Lee-Anne Hall, and Collections Manager, Dr Shirley Daborn, visited the school and selected the ceramic works of Year 12 student, Alana Thomas, and Year 11 students, Nicoletta Bellino, Claudia Beghetto, Jasmine Clarke, Amber English and Laura Wonson. The works are now on exhibition in the gallery’s Ancher House which also features works by the original owner, Margot Lewers.

As part of the Notanda program, students took a tour of the gallery and the collection with Dr Daborn. From these visits, the students developped a design for a ceramic form that is their interpretation of an aspect of the Penrith Regional Gallery site – the gallery collection or the gallery site including the original house and garden.

Dr Hall said the partnership between Penrith Regional Gallery and Caroline Chisholm has sought opportunities for students and teachers to work collaboratively with gallery and museum professionals and with visiting artists in ways that deepen student access, experience and appreciation of the visual arts.
‘The partnership continues to strengthen with the recent exhibition of student ceramic works Notanda On Site produced as a unit of study in response to the gallery’s modernist collection and architecture,’ said Dr Hall.

Creative Arts Leader of Learning, Karen King said working with local resources such as the superb Modernist collection at Penrith Regional Gallery was an integral part of the Notanda program.
‘We want to recognise what is significant in our local area and give students an opportunity to learn about this site and its important role in Australia Art History,’ Karen said. ‘We also want the students to be working with professionals in the field such as the curators and collections managers at the gallery so their artmaking is relevant and built on best practice.’
‘One of the key intentions of this unit is to introduce students to the history and significance of the gallery site and to help them appreciate and value this important local site,’ she said. ‘It is a real privilege for the students to be able to have the opportunity to exhibit their works in a professional gallery and we have been fortunate to be able to work in partnership with the gallery.’

The name for the unit, Notanda, has been taken from the name of ground-breaking design shop run by Margot in the 1950s in Rowe St, Sydney. The name of the shop, Notanda, meant ‘worthy of note’ and featured a selection of modern homewares, textiles, ceramics, jewellery and artworks.
Margot, with her husband, Gerald Lewers, were founding members of the Contemporary Art Society of NSW. Their house on the banks of the Nepean River was an important site where many significant artists and writers would stay and work.

Year 7.3 PDH students recently took on the challenge of designing and marketing a healthy lunch option for the school canteen as part of the 'Eat Well, Live Well' unit. Working in groups, students researched nutritious ingredients, considered cost-effectiveness, and developed creative marketing strategies to promote their product. The task culminated in a live presentation where students pitched their ideas, showcasing their understanding of nutrition, teamwork, and persuasive communication. The task generated a range of innovative and well-considered ideas, highlighting the students’ enthusiasm and growing understanding of healthy food choices.

Our Intermediate PDSSSC Soccer team secured a hard-fought 3–2 victory over St Columba’s in challenging wet conditions this week. Despite dominating possession throughout much of the first half and creating numerous scoring opportunities, the girls were unable to find the back of the net until Abuk K. broke through late in the half, giving Chisholm a 1–0 lead at the break. St Columba’s came out strong in the second half, scoring early to level the match. The girls responded well, moving the ball effectively and working together as a team, with Abuk scoring her second goal of the game. St Columba’s again fought back to make it 2–2 before Ava M. calmly slotted home the winning goal. It was a fantastic team performance in difficult conditions, with all players showing determination, resilience, and teamwork throughout the match. A special thank you to the parents and supporters who braved the rain to cheer the team on from the sidelines. Your support is greatly appreciated!

7 Wright and 7 Mackillop have explored the history and significance of the Terracotta Warriors in their HSIE lessons. They’ve learnt about the warrior’s connection to China's first emperor and their role in protecting him in the afterlife. Drawing on their understanding of this ancient archaeological discovery, students then used air-dry clay to design and create their own Terracotta Warrior sculptures. This hands-on activity encouraged creativity while helping students develop a deeper appreciation of ancient Chinese culture and craftsmanship.

Today, our Year 8 Engineering students proudly presented their Lolly Dispenser projects, showcasing the innovative solutions they have designed and constructed throughout the term. Working to a real-world design brief, students developed dispensers capable of launching one lolly at a time using a slide mechanism while considering functionality, safety, aesthetics, and manufacturing constraints. Congratulations to all students for their creativity, problem-solving skills, and dedication throughout this exciting engineering challenge!

On the 30 and 31 May Ariana S in Year 9, had the honour of representing Australia at an International Acrobatics World Cup competition held in Burgas, Bulgaria. Ariana competed against athletes from around the world, this was an incredible experience and a great opportunity to challenge Ariana at the highest level. After two days of competing, Ariana achieved an overall ranking of 13th in the world . Representing Australia on the international stage was a proud moment for her and her two bases. The experience taught her valuable lessons about dedication, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Ariana was inspired to meet athletes from different countries and compete among some of the world's best acrobats. Well done Ariana. We are all very proud of you here at Caroline Chisholm College.

7HSIE 3 created their own Ming Vases during their final History lesson for the semester. Ming vases are renowned for their beautiful designs and high-quality porcelain. Often decorated in blue and white, these vases were traded across the world and became highly sought after for their intricate patterns and motifs, including birds, flowers and waves. Their popularity made them a symbol of wealth and status, and they were even referenced in English expressions as something precious and fragile. Students enjoyed showcasing their creativity while developing their understanding of the significance of trade and cultural exchange during the Ming Dynasty.

Our Year 7 Food and Agriculture students had a fantastic morning out on the farm, working together to remove weeds from the garden beds and prepare the area for the next semester. They also enjoyed meeting our baby calves and feeding the chickens. It was a great hands-on experience that gave students the chance to connect with agriculture, sustainability, and animal care.

The girls had an amazing time competing in their first competition for the season, the PDSSSC Dance Competition, coming away with some amazing results. The Contemporary, Lyrical, Jazz and Cultural companies performed really well and received outstanding points and feedback for their efforts.
