“Because of Her, We Can” - a NAIDOC Week celebration!

12 Jul 2018

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are being celebrated and recognised for the significant contribution they make to families, communities, art, music and culture under the theme of this year’s NAIDOC week (8-15 July).

As part of NAIDOC week celebrations, Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta’s Jarara Indigenous Education, along with Holy Family Primary, Emerton held special events to reflect on this year’s theme, “Because of Her, We Can”.

Former Caroline Chisholm student and proud Wiradjuri woman Ashleigh Bridge was a guest speaker at the event.

Ashleigh spoke about her grandmother’s life and how this has helped Ashleigh and her family to be the people they are today.

“I think Indigenous women in our society are so unsung and overlooked," Ashleigh said.

“I think it is important during NAIDOC Week that we remember our roots. It is really important to remember how far we have come, but also how far we have to go!”

Jarara Aboriginal Education Assistant Ann-Maree Bridge said she loves working with her students and that they are so proud of their Aboriginal culture.

“It is about celebrating the fact we are all Australian people, but Aboriginal Australians were here first," she said.

“It’s about celebrating our culture and getting everyone involved and saying it is not about us and them, it is about everyone and having fun.”

Shanaya and Jumikah Donovan from Catherine McAuley Westmead spoke at and helped lead the smoking ceremony at Holy Family Primary, Emerton.

Shanaya Donovan said this year’s theme was all about acknowledging that Indigenous women are the backbone of society and that they were the first teachers and nurturers and today they are leaders in everything from sport to law.

NAIDOC3

Professional Aboriginal dancer and proud Kamilaroi woman Becky Chatfield led students in learning about the art and culture of dance, explaining that it was the main learning tool for Indigenous children when they are growing up.

"Because of Her, We Can!"- is a very important theme for me, as my family has a lot of strong Aboriginal women and this message is something I hope to pass onto my daughter,’’ she said.

"Celebrating the strength of our women is so important not only for those women but for the next generation as well."

Taliesha is making a splash for Australians living with multiple sclerosis (MS) by taking on the MS Mega Challenge! This is a 24-hour team relay swim at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre starting at 12 noon on Saturday 30 August. MS strikes young people in the prime of their lives, the average age of diagnosis is only 30 years old and there is currently no known cure. Taliesha’s MS Mega Challenge is raising money for vital support and services, and fund the MS Go for Gold Scholarships to help people with MS realise a dream. We are very proud of Taliesha’s generous effort and concern for others. Please support Taliesha’s MS Mega Challenge. You can make a donation through her fundraising page: https://www.msmegachallenge.org.au/s/7048/10402/e

Year 9 Become Campus Detectives! Our team of intrepid Year 9 investigators took on Kingswood for the first exciting chapter of the WSU Fast Forward Program — and they absolutely rose to the challenge! In a fast-paced simulated investigation, our students put their transferable skills to the test — problem-solving, communicating, collaborating, showing initiative and resilience — all while working as a united team to crack the case. Along the way, they explored the vibrant WSU learning environment, built their confidence, expanded their awareness of post-school opportunities, and embraced the value of being lifelong learners. A big thank you to Ana and the WSU Future Student Engagement team for hosting this innovative and inspiring start to the program. We can’t wait for the next chapters of this journey, with more campus visits and student coaching consultations still to come! Bullying No Way Week is this week! Bullying No Way Week is Australia's key bullying prevention initiative for schools. It provides an opportunity for schools to create a shared understanding about bullying behaviours and share their bullying prevention policies and strategies. The theme for 2025 is 'Be bold. Be kind. Speak up.' Bullying is everyone's responsibility. It takes a community to be brave and address bullying behaviours, within and beyond the school gate. Students can be bold, kind and take a stand to support others being bullied. While parents and teachers are there to support children and young people learn how to behave in a positive way. In our community and in our school, we want a place where everyone can belong, a place that celebrates everyone, and where bullying is never accepted. Tomorrow during our Wellbeing Lesson students will be engaging in a Wellio Lesson that focuses on practical strategies for handling bullying, whether as a victim or a bystander, and practise how to intervene in a positive manner. @Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

Careers are more than just the jobs we do - they encompass our life journey: work, family, travel and opportunities along the way. Today's Lunch & Learn captured this concept like no other! Our guest speaker Jane Ewing has had an extensive career in a range of roles and industries, spanning meteorology, aviation, science, research and mathematics education. A true lifelong learner and innovator, Jane has broken barriers in male-dominated industries with perseverance, curiosity and grit. Her inspiring life story highlighted not only the power of resilience but also her passion for empowering others and looking at life and careers from a female perspective — something she continues in her current role advocating passionately for women to pursue apprenticeships with NECA NSW. Thank you, Jane, for sharing your journey, wisdom and encouragement with our students. Our audience left feeling motivated, energised and empowered to chase big dreams!
