Welcome to The Haven

11 May 2018

WelcomeToTheHaven
Caroline Chisholm College teacher Penny Mabon, Georgia Wood and Lindsay federal Labor MP Emma Husar prepare welcome packs for women arriving at The Haven in Penrith.

Six students from Year 12's Kenny House Homeroom have spent a number of months preparing donations and welcome-packs for victims of domestic violence at "The Haven", showing their passion for the survivors of domestic violence.

"We have been raising money for this initiative since November last year," house leader Georgia Wood said.

The students bought supplies with money raised which was between $1000-2000. George said that her fellow homeroom students planned out the items needed for the welcome packs and submitted the proposal to the principal, who then also offered input.

The students spent the afternoon of May 1 filling 100 packs with carefully thought-out necessities such as shampoo, a hairbrush, toothpaste and deodorant.

George said it was important for the community to support facilities like The Haven. “We like to believe we’re a sister school that looks out for each other and the community,” Georgia said.

“With The Haven opening we thought it would be a good idea (to create welcome packs).

“For my school and my homeroom it was something small that we could do.”

The Haven is a shelter for victims of domestic violence and was opened in Penrith by Stuart Ayres and Pru Goward on April 3

The shelter has 19 beds for families escaping domestic violence. Its $400,000 annual budget will be funded by the State Government through Women’s Community Shelters and the community.

Year 10 have been exploring the topic 'Surface Area and Volume' this term. Students built their own 3D manipulative to help visualise the net and the solid object it forms. This supports developing a deeper understanding when applying the formulas for the topic.

After two weeks on the sidelines due to ground closures, both our Junior and Intermediate teams returned to the court ready to fire. Our Junior team delivered a dominant performance, defeating St Patrick’s Marist Dundas in straight sets, 3–0. Their serving was outstanding and kept the pressure on from start to finish. The Intermediates also came away with a strong win, defeating St Pat’s 2–1 in a hard-fought match. They showed fantastic resilience, great teamwork, and some seriously impressive serving when it mattered most. A huge congratulations to both teams on a fantastic return to the court. Thank you to the parents who came and supported the teams.

Thanks to the incredibly generous donations from our students and families in the lead-up to last week’s International Women’s Day, we were so pleased to present Trish from The Haven with dozens of 'pamper hampers' for women rebuilding their lives. Trish was overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of our community, and it was a very special moment to see the many bags of thoughtful items that had been contributed through homerooms. Last Friday, students came together to assemble the hampers, turning these donations into meaningful gifts of care and dignity. These pamper hampers will be donated to The Haven, a shelter in the Nepean region dedicated to protecting and empowering women who are facing hardship. Thank you to everyone who helped make this beautiful act of compassion possible.

We wish Alyssa (Year 10) and Charlotte (Year 7) all the best as they participate in the upcoming Grand Final of the CSDA Public Speaking Competition. To qualify they have been selected above 80% of the finalists from Catholic schools in the wider Sydney area. Their skills and representation of our College are most impressive. Well done to them both.

Our Year 10 SRC Leaders headed into the CBD for an incredible leadership experience at IBM headquarters in Sydney, taking part in an inspiring workshop made possible through a partnership with Crazy Ideas College(CIC). The event brought together young women from diverse backgrounds to connect, share ideas and learn from IBM mentors in a space that celebrated success, addressed real-world challenges and empowered students to imagine a fairer future for everyone. Students further developed their leadership skills, explored future career pathways and connected with inspiring female leaders from this leading global organisation. Through CIC’s Lead4Impact (L4i) model, participants gained valuable tools and mindsets for leadership - empowering them to shape their futures and create positive change in their schools and communities. A huge thank you to Julian and Zali at Crazy Ideas College, as well as IBM, for providing such an incredible opportunity for our students to continue growing and thriving as leaders.

On Wednesday last week, the elective Dance classes ventured into the city to watch The Great Gatsby - A Dance Odyssey at the Capitol Theatre. It was an amazing opportunity for the girls to view a live performance in such a beautiful old theatre. They represented our College exceptionally and interacted well with the general public, even helping some of the older patrons up and down the stairs. It was a wonderful way to spend a Wednesday.

Last week the Year 12 Legal Studies students stepped beyond the classroom and into the heart of the justice system as they visited Penrith Local Courts. Students had the opportunity to observe real life court proceedings, notably sentencing procedures, witness testimony and the cells below the Court House. It was brilliant to see such enthusiasm from the students, just in time for their next assessment task on Crime.

Caroline Chisholm College was proudly represented in partnership with Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese and Business Western Sydney at the ‘Business Western Sydney International Women’s Day Luncheon’ last Friday, alongside members of the CSPD Executive. Deputy Premier of NSW Prue Car delivered the keynote address. A distinguished alumnae of Caroline Chisholm College, and former College Captain, the Deputy Premier shared her hopes for young women in Western Sydney and later took a selfie with our current student leaders and Principal Mrs Tania Cairns - a special moment capturing the connection between past and present generations of Caroline Chisholm women. It was a powerful reminder of what our students can aspire to and the impact our graduates continue to have in the community. It was a proud moment to see the Deputy Premier share her inspiring story at the luncheon. Our Captains also gave a vote of thanks, emphasising that while women have made many gains, there is still much work to be done to balance the scales for women in 2026. This event was a wonderful reminder of the strength of our community, with past and present Chisholm women representing the College with pride.
