Year 10 PDHPE Excursion

27 Aug 2014

B-Streetsmart Road Safety at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College Glenmore Park

On Tuesday 19th August, Year 10 travelled to the Allphones Arena in Sydney Olympic Park for the annual B-Streetsmart road safety forum.

Upon arriving at the venue, we were amazed by the turnout – there were thousands of other students from schools across Sydney. We were not disappointed. The day began with a presentation from Ken Harrison, a Nepean Hospital trauma doctor. To complement the information he provided us about the risks of dangerous driving, a team of talented performers dramatised for us the scene of a car accident involving young people.

The very realistic performance moved us deeply, encouraging us to consider what it would be like to find ourselves responsible for a car crash, the impact it would have on our passengers, and the health and legal consequences that would follow. Most importantly, the performance walked us through the necessary procedures for dealing with a road crash as either victims or witnesses

Next we were privileged to hear the stories of speakers who have been involved in car accidents and have sustained life-long, life-changing injuries. Among these was ‘Darby’, who was in his twenties when he took risks on the road while riding a motorbike for the first time. His account of his injuries and the years’ worth of rehab that followed was an eye-opener for us all.

Highlights of the day were performances from Morgan Evans, the Australian singer-songwriter who shared with us his personal stories relating to the shocking consequences of unsafe road use on everyone involved, and lunchtime exhibits. During our break, we explored the venue and participated in the various interactive exhibits set up by emergency services, leading health organisations and NSW driving schools. We especially enjoyed learning first aid and competing with each other in wheelchair basketball.

After lunch we learnt about spinal injuries and the science of road crashes. Evan Walker from NSW Transport gave us valuable insights into the importance of safety driving courses for drivers under 25, which was very relevant as most of us will be learning to drive within the next few years. After that, it was back to the buses for the return trip to school.

Year 10 thoroughly loved the experience of the forum, which was engaging and had a concert-like feel. We learnt many new things and hope that future participants will find the excursion as useful as we did.

Wet weather forced a change of plan so we headed into the craziness of Tokyo! We saw the moat walls of the Imperial Palace on our way to the Science Museum. Then a quick visit to Shibuya to see Hachiko and Shibuya Crossing in the rain. Our students have become expert at navigating the complicated and crowded trains and subways!

Our students in Japan have enjoyed their first full day at school. The day began with them all introducing themselves via a live broadcast to the school! After a school tour and orientation the girls participated in a range of lessons such ad world history and Japanese history, classical Japanese and coding. The classes were very challenging but new friends helped our students learn new words and kanji. The students also did very well in calligraphy and art lessons, impressing their hosts. Before eating home made obento lunch with their classmates, they had to clean their classroom, of course. After school, they joined a variety of clubs such as dance, music, choir, badminton and home economics. It was a very full day and the best thing was getting to know so many new friends speaking in English and Japanese.

Our students in Japan travelled by bullet train, for the last time, to Tokyo and then travelled by local transport to our sister school, Tokyo Junshin. We were warmly welcomed by their host families, who showed great kindness and hospitality. It was wonderful to see Eana and Fuyune, who spent Term 1 at CCC. Eana is hosting Lili and Fuyune came to help Ysabelle and Navroop try on their Tokyo Junshin uniforms.

Our Japanese students began the day with a traditional sweets-making workshop, followed by a tea ceremony, where they learned about the careful preparation and appreciation of matcha. Lunch was a casual treat at Mos Burger, enjoying Japan’s unique take on fast food. In the afternoon, we enjoyed some retail therapy. We enjoyed kushikatsu for dinner and revelled in the bright neon lights and lively atmosphere of Osaka’s most famous entertainment district, Dōtonbori.

After a bullet train ride from Okayama to Osaka, our students in Japan spent the afternoon and evening exploring the Osaka Expo pavilions. Our senses were overwhelmed by the crowds and the sheer size of the purpose built expo site. Thanks to Mrs Merriman’s personal connection at the Indonesia Pavillion, we were treated as VIPs and were able to skip the long queues, gaining access to the pavillions of Kuwait, Japan, Pasamo (medical sciences), Indonesia and Australia. Mr Dody S. Sembodo Kusumonegoro, Minister Counsellor at the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka, was hosted by Mrs Merriman’s family for twelve months when she was in Year 12 and they remain very close to this day. We also enjoyed fireworks from the top of The Ring, the largest wooden structure in the world made without the use of nails. What an incredible opportunity to see the world gather together in one place, showcasing ther very best of culture and innovation and programs to meet the UN’s Sustainability Goals.

Our Japanese students began the day with a scenic train journey over the Seto Ōhashi Bridge, an engineering marvel stretching across the sea to connect Honshu with Shikoku Island. Their first stop was the breathtaking Ritsurin Garden, famous for its ponds, arched bridges, and carefully pruned pine trees that have been shaped for hundreds of years. For lunch, we enjoyed Sanuki udon, Shikoku’s most famous dish. In the afternoon, the group took part in a traditional temari-making workshop. Temari, meaning “hand ball,” began centuries ago as a children’s toy made from scraps of old kimono fabric. Over time, they evolved into highly decorative works of art, with colourful silk threads wrapped and stitched into intricate geometric patterns. Our students learned the techniques from expert artisans and were amazed by the patience and precision required to create such delicate designs. They each left with their own handmade temari as a special keepsake of their time in Japan. The day finished back in Okayama where some students enjoyed sushi delivered to them by train!

Our Japanese students started the day exploring Korakuen, one of Japan’s three most famous gardens, where they enjoyed the beauty of ponds, tea houses, and carefully landscaped scenery. We were very lucky to be there on one of the special days when cranes (tsuru) walk around the garden. We then visited Okayama Castle, known as the “Crow Castle” for its striking black exterior, and learned about its rich samurai history. In the afternoon, we wandered through the historic Kurashiki Bikan district, with its preserved canals, white-walled storehouses, and old merchant houses now filled with shops and galleries. Our flagging energy was renewed with two hours of karaoke!

Our Japanese students began the day at Miyajima, admiring the iconic floating torii gate up close at low tide. From there, we travelled to Hiroshima, visiting the A-Bomb Dome and the Peace Memorial Museum, reflecting on the importance of peace and reconciliation. At the Peace Park, we took part in a deeply moving experience, offering 1,000 folded paper cranes at Sadako’s statue, a symbol of peace and hope for children worldwide. We were excited to buy our first konbini lunch before the excitement of a bullet train ride to Okayama.

As is the tradition in a ryokan, we all wore yukata on the premises. There were so many different dishes presented beautifully. Student favourites were sukiyaki and tempura. Local delicacies included oysters and anago (conger eel).

After an overnight flight to Tokyo and a connecting flight to Hiroshima, our Japanese students made their way by bus and ferry to the beautiful island of Miyajima. Famous for its “floating” torii gate, Miyajima is considered one of the most scenic places in Japan and has long been a site of spiritual significance. We are staying in a traditional ryokan, where tatami rooms and futon beds give us a true taste of Japanese culture. Today’s challenge was to take a selfie with a deer! We ate the local specialty, okonomiyaki for lunch, and tonight, we will enjoy a multi-course kaiseki dinner, with seasonal dishes beautifully prepared and presented.

We were thrilled to have five female Penrith Panthers players join us today to assist in awarding our PDSSSC Thursday sport teams' MVP players as well as engage in a question and answer session with Mrs Peters. It was so inspiring to hear from talented female athletes who juggle work, parenting and family demands as well as excel in the sport that they love. Thank you also o Mrs Peters for organising the Panthers protein shakers and flags that were awarded to 60 students that were present today.

Today the Caroline Chisholm Community celebrated jersey day. Student's came to school in their team colours to support and raise awareness for organ and tissue donation. Jersey Day was inspired by the gift of life that Nathan Gremmo gave to six people when he became an organ donor at age 13. Jersey day aims to encourage people to begin the conversation with their family and friends about the importance of becoming an organ and tissue donor.
