Chit Chat radio at Caroline Chisholm College, Glenmore Park

15 Sep 2014

Chit Chat Radio at Caroline Chisholm Glenmore Park

An inspired idea became an exciting reality on Friday September 12 when Caroline Chisholm College students launched their online brand of radio Chit Chat.

Chit Chat broadcasts live from the Glenmore Park Catholic school near Penrith, West of Sydney, and allows students to create their own program content.

Caroline Chisholm’s Chit Chat features news, entertainment, music and builds community spirit at the College with comical segments and local interviews.

College Principal, Mrs Mary Leask, said the live show of 20 minutes is presented by the students on school grounds, and the product is shared to students via a link on the College Moodle webpage.

Chit Chat Radio G.King

“The studio is very modest using basic software and technology but it provides a powerful learning experience for the students in media and communications,” said Mrs Leask.

“Students generate the content, select the playlist for the station, present the segments and write material for a target audience,” she said. “We have also been very fortunate to have the generous support and industry expertise of one of parents, Mr Darren McErlain.”

Year 12 student Lauren Bozic said programme highlights such as the secret sound competition of teacher’s footsteps and a tongue-in-cheek corridor traffic report makes great radio.

“Our ideas are often concerned with local based content for our College, with an entertaining spin,” said Lauren.

“This project has taught us the art of speaking clearly, creative writing for radio and the social responsibility in journalism of checking facts,” she said.

Yzzy and Nav, our year 10 students on term exchange in Japan have settled in wonderfully. Their host families have welcomed them like their own, with shared dinners, outings, and plenty of new foods to try, from takoyaki to ramen. At school, they’re enjoying homeroom traditions, clean-up time, delicious bento lunch boxes, and clubs like chorus, handbells, and badminton. They’ve made friends quickly and appreciate how respectful and supportive the Tokyo Junshin school community is. They’ve explored places like The Making of Harry Potter, Mt Fuji, and Inokashira Park Zoo, and are loving Japan’s quiet public transport, convenience stores, and daily routines. We’re proud of how positively they’re embracing every part of the experience. We will be welcoming 2 Japanese students from our sister school for 8 weeks in term 1 next year. We a looking for host families for them now. Hosting is a fabulous life experience filled with unforgettable memories. Following their recent 2nd place in the Australian Catholic University VOYSE Social Enterprise Challenge — the One Stop Swap team have taken part in an exclusive Lunch and Learn mentoring session with entrepreneur Lee Ussher, founder of Buzz Web Media. This mentoring opportunity was part of a package, which also included a $500 cash prize. During the session, Lee provided the team with targeted feedback on their concept and insightful suggestions for taking their social enterprise project to the next phase — including social media, branding and direct marketing strategies. Lee also shared her own fascinating career journey, from beginning as a primary school educator to developing her own groundbreaking and unique business model. Her broader discussion encouraged students to reflect on their own pathways and offered practical advice for shaping their future career aspirations. We are very grateful to Lee for sharing her time and expertise with the team and a sincere thank you to Adjoa Assan and ACU for organising and catering this fantastic opportunity for our students.

A huge thank you to Alison Hall and the Western Weekender for their fabulous support of our recent Careers High Tea. The latest edition features a wonderful article that perfectly captures the spirit and essence of our event. We also want to extend a big congratulations to Year 12 student Rhianna, who was featured in the story. Today’s Lunch and Learn session gave students an inspiring look into how a passion for science can grow into a meaningful and impactful career in healthcare! We were thrilled to welcome back former CCC student Taranpreet Kaur (Class of 2021), now enjoying a rewarding career as a Laboratory Assistant with 4Cyte Pathology, after completing her Bachelor of Science (Biomedical) at University of Technology Sydney last year. Taran shared her high school journey, including the subjects that sparked her interest in science, along with the challenges and doubts she experienced when choosing her degree. Her openness helped reassure students who may be feeling the same uncertainties. She also spoke about the university experience, highlighting how different types of degrees can lead to diverse pathways in science and health. Taran offered insights into common university challenges and practical ways to gain experience, such as volunteering, part-time work and placements. A standout moment of her talk was exploring why pathology matters—how laboratory work supports doctors, guides diagnosis, and ultimately saves lives. She emphasised the unseen but essential role pathology plays in patient care, shining a light on a field many students don’t often get to see. Taran wrapped up with some fantastic tips for students: - Be open to trying different jobs — skills often transfer in surprising ways. - Don’t be afraid to start small or change direction. - Networking, volunteering, and confidence matter just as much as grades. A huge thank you to Taran for sharing her journey, wisdom and encouragement. She left our students feeling inspired, informed, and excited about the many possibilities ahead in science and healthcare!

A team of Year 9 students with a passion for STEM jumped at the rare opportunity to take part in an impressive careers showcase within the Western Harbour Tunnel Project, hosted by ACCIONA at Penola Catholic College Emu Plains. Together with Penola, St Luke's Catholic College and Cathwest Innovation College, our students thoroughly enjoyed this immersive experience, which opened their eyes to the diverse and exciting pathways in construction, engineering and tunnelling. Importantly, it gave them direct access to industry professionals shaping one of Sydney’s biggest infrastructure projects. The day kicked off with a “Tunnel Trivia” icebreaker, where they teamed up to answer fun questions about tunnels, bridges and iconic Sydney landmarks, before diving into an inspiring project presentation outlining the scale and vision of the Western Harbour Tunnel. Across the immersive and dynamic 90-minute session, students experienced: - a VR tunnel walkthrough – virtually stepping inside the tunnel environment; - a digital interactive table – exploring and discussing key project components; - meetings with members of the Acciona team for a PPE challenge as well as a discussion around tunneling careers and engineering pathways. A huge thank you to ACCIONA, Stephanie Campanale at Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese, Jared Wilson (RIEP) and Peta Lewin and the Penola community for providing this opportunity, supporting hands-on learning and strengthening real career pathways for our students.

Last Friday our students were invited to attend the wide-ranging NBMLHD Research Showcase at Nepean Hospital. Under the theme 'Research Together', the event opened with Brad Astill, Chief Executive Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD), reminding us that achievement comes through aspiration and determination — a message that truly resonated with our students. They were especially inspired by keynote speaker, Professor Louise Baur AM, a globally recognised leader in childhood health, whose impact showed them what’s possible when passion meets purpose. We also heard from 13 exceptional female researchers, each excelling in her field and demonstrating the power of persistence, curiosity and innovation. For our students, the day sparked new ambition: - Seeing world-class research close to home - Hearing from women leading the way - Realising their own ideas — no matter how small — can grow into something extraordinary A huge thank you to Kia-Lee Sutton for inviting us to experience this opportunity, Dianne Diamante for making us feel so welcome, and all presenters for creating such an empowering learning experience.

As our Year 12 (Class of 2025) officially signed out from the College this week - we took some time to have a chat with many of them and find out 'What's Next?'. The year group is exploring a diverse range of post-school pathways, with many considering university degrees and TAFE/college plus apprenticeships, traineeships, employment and gap years to work, travel and build skills before pursuing further study or training. For those heading to uni - our Year 12s have already received 212 early offers from which to choose their exciting next steps. We wish our Year 12s a very happy and bright future and congratulate them on all they have achieved as they now begin the next chapter in their lives! Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese
