Chit Chat radio at Caroline Chisholm College, Glenmore Park

15 Sep 2014

Chit Chat Radio at Caroline Chisholm Glenmore Park

An inspired idea became an exciting reality on Friday September 12 when Caroline Chisholm College students launched their online brand of radio Chit Chat.

Chit Chat broadcasts live from the Glenmore Park Catholic school near Penrith, West of Sydney, and allows students to create their own program content.

Caroline Chisholm’s Chit Chat features news, entertainment, music and builds community spirit at the College with comical segments and local interviews.

College Principal, Mrs Mary Leask, said the live show of 20 minutes is presented by the students on school grounds, and the product is shared to students via a link on the College Moodle webpage.

“The studio is very modest using basic software and technology but it provides a powerful learning experience for the students in media and communications,” said Mrs Leask.

“Students generate the content, select the playlist for the station, present the segments and write material for a target audience,” she said. “We have also been very fortunate to have the generous support and industry expertise of one of parents, Mr Darren McErlain.”

Year 12 student Lauren Bozic said programme highlights such as the secret sound competition of teacher’s footsteps and a tongue-in-cheek corridor traffic report makes great radio.

“Our ideas are often concerned with local based content for our College, with an entertaining spin,” said Lauren.

“This project has taught us the art of speaking clearly, creative writing for radio and the social responsibility in journalism of checking facts,” she said.

Year 7 students are currently enjoying their study of ancient Egypt and 7HSIE4 experimented with the Egyptian practice of mummification by seeing if we could mummify an orange. We removed all the fruit from inside the skin, dried it out as much as possible, then filled it with a mixture of bicarb soda and salt. We added a touch of cinnamon to enhance the smell, and wrapped our ‘mummies’ in bandages, then gave them an ancient Egyptian name. A week or two will tell if our efforts at mummification were effective! Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

Year 9 and Year 11 Photography and Digital Media students together with Year 9 Visual Arts students attended an excursion to Cockatoo Island, where they photographed the site in preparation for their next units of work. A wonderful excursion that provided our students with an opportunity to research ideas for their practical works as practising photographers and artists prior to producing their works. @Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

Congratulations to our Intermediate netball team who secured a win in our first match of the season against St Columba’s 21/17. It was a great effort considering 6 of our original team were out due to injury and trialing for the CCC Representative netball team. A big thank you to Mia, Ruby S and Ruby P for filling in. We are extremely proud of all of you and the way you pulled together to get the win. A HUGE congratulations to Ella G and Aleighya P who were successful in making the CCC Netball team. Such an amazing result ladies and we wish you the best of luck at the next carnival. Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

We’re incredibly proud of a dedicated group of students who have been working hard behind the scenes to complete a microcredential as part of our Ready Set Work (RSW) program. Through regular lunchtime sessions delivered by our Partnerships & Pathways Coaches, and using the resources of partner organisation Study Work Grow, these students have developed key transferable skills to prepare them for real-world job applications. They’ve just completed their final module, which involved one of the most challenging steps in any job process – the interview! Stepping bravely out of their comfort zones, they participated in mock interviews and received valuable feedback to refine their skills and build confidence. But they didn’t do it alone! A massive thank you to our incredible Year 12 mentors, who volunteered their time to guide and support their peers. Their leadership, encouragement and advice made a real difference and reflected the wonderful spirit of community within our school. Congratulations to all our Ready Set Work students for their commitment and to our mentors for their inspiring support. We can’t wait for the upcoming Ready Set Work graduation and to see what’s next in these students' early careers! Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese
