“Because of Her, We Can” - a NAIDOC Week celebration!

12 Jul 2018

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are being celebrated and recognised for the significant contribution they make to families, communities, art, music and culture under the theme of this year’s NAIDOC week (8-15 July).

As part of NAIDOC week celebrations, Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta’s Jarara Indigenous Education, along with Holy Family Primary, Emerton held special events to reflect on this year’s theme, “Because of Her, We Can”.

Former Caroline Chisholm student and proud Wiradjuri woman Ashleigh Bridge was a guest speaker at the event.

Ashleigh spoke about her grandmother’s life and how this has helped Ashleigh and her family to be the people they are today.

“I think Indigenous women in our society are so unsung and overlooked," Ashleigh said.

“I think it is important during NAIDOC Week that we remember our roots. It is really important to remember how far we have come, but also how far we have to go!”

Jarara Aboriginal Education Assistant Ann-Maree Bridge said she loves working with her students and that they are so proud of their Aboriginal culture.

“It is about celebrating the fact we are all Australian people, but Aboriginal Australians were here first," she said.

“It’s about celebrating our culture and getting everyone involved and saying it is not about us and them, it is about everyone and having fun.”

Shanaya and Jumikah Donovan from Catherine McAuley Westmead spoke at and helped lead the smoking ceremony at Holy Family Primary, Emerton.

Shanaya Donovan said this year’s theme was all about acknowledging that Indigenous women are the backbone of society and that they were the first teachers and nurturers and today they are leaders in everything from sport to law.

NAIDOC3

Professional Aboriginal dancer and proud Kamilaroi woman Becky Chatfield led students in learning about the art and culture of dance, explaining that it was the main learning tool for Indigenous children when they are growing up.

"Because of Her, We Can!"- is a very important theme for me, as my family has a lot of strong Aboriginal women and this message is something I hope to pass onto my daughter,’’ she said.

"Celebrating the strength of our women is so important not only for those women but for the next generation as well."

7 Tech students completed their first practical lesson in the kitchen this week! As part of our Farm Fresh to Frying Pan unit, students prepared and beautifully presented their own fresh fruit salad. They demonstrated safe knife skills, hygienic work practices, and an understanding of seasonal produce. A fantastic start to developing confidence, organisation and practical food preparation skills. Well done 7TECH 👏

There are so many contributing factors to HSC success and one of those has been our innovative HSC Peer Tutor Program, which is featured in the latest edition of the Western Weekender! In the article, we hear from two mentors, Louise Armstrong (College Captain, Class of 2022) and Evelyn Shanley (Class of 2023), current Year 12 students Shabeena, Grace, Olivia and Shayma, as well as College Principal, Tania Cairns. The Peer Tutor program sees high-performing HSC graduates from the Classes of 2022 and 2023 return to our College each week to mentor, guide and support current students across more than 20 HSC subjects. Their dedication and expertise not only boosts academic confidence but also strengthens the bond between the past and present students in our community. Here more about the program in a video featuring our students and mentors here: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1CTX4ENAvH/ A huge thank you to Alison Hall and the Western Weekender for shining a light on this program and the meaningful impact it has on our students.

It was a fascinating look behind the scenes of film and TV production when Ms Devlin's Year 10 class took part in a film shoot to promote the UNSW School of Economics’ 2026 STEP UP Playconomics Competition. Our College will be offering this opportunity to students in Years 10–12 later this year when the competition opens - especially those studying Commerce and Business Studies - so it was a great preview of what’s to come! One of College Alumnae, Sophie McLaughlin (Year 12, 2025) was the 2024 national winner - finishing in the top 0.5% of students across Australia. A huge thank-you to Mike and Nash from StoryStack for helping bring this together on behalf of the UNSW STEP UP Team and the UNSW Business School – School of Economics (Loretti Isabella Dobrescu and Alberto Motta). What an exciting learning experience for our students!

Today our Year 12 Hospitality students travelled into the Sydney CBD to complete the practical component of their Barista course. This course is designed to put theory into practice, requiring students to confidently: ✔️ Greet customers professionally ✔️ Take accurate orders ✔️ Ask clarifying questions ✔️ Suggest suitable choices based on customer preferences ✔️ Prepare and serve quality espresso coffee Each student had access to their own commercial coffee machine and grinder, giving them authentic, hands-on industry experience. It was fantastic to see them working independently, applying their knowledge, and refining their milk texturing, extraction and presentation skills. Experiences like this strengthen their confidence, build real-world service skills, and prepare them for employment pathways within the hospitality industry. We are incredibly proud of the professionalism and focus they demonstrated today! 👏☕️

Year 11 Ancient History participated in an activity where they explored the types of jewellery worn by people of different cultures in the Ancient period. This activity is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of how archaeologists and historians use material culture to reconstruct the past and interpret ancient societies. The students enjoyed the experience and recognised the challenge for ancient craftspeople in having to create these items for use in their time.
