“Because of Her, We Can” - a NAIDOC Week celebration!

12 Jul 2018

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are being celebrated and recognised for the significant contribution they make to families, communities, art, music and culture under the theme of this year’s NAIDOC week (8-15 July).

As part of NAIDOC week celebrations, Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta’s Jarara Indigenous Education, along with Holy Family Primary, Emerton held special events to reflect on this year’s theme, “Because of Her, We Can”.

NAIDOC1

Former Caroline Chisholm student and proud Wiradjuri woman Ashleigh Bridge was a guest speaker at the event.

Ashleigh spoke about her grandmother’s life and how this has helped Ashleigh and her family to be the people they are today.

“I think Indigenous women in our society are so unsung and overlooked," Ashleigh said.

“I think it is important during NAIDOC Week that we remember our roots. It is really important to remember how far we have come, but also how far we have to go!”

Jarara Aboriginal Education Assistant Ann-Maree Bridge said she loves working with her students and that they are so proud of their Aboriginal culture.

“It is about celebrating the fact we are all Australian people, but Aboriginal Australians were here first," she said.

“It’s about celebrating our culture and getting everyone involved and saying it is not about us and them, it is about everyone and having fun.”

Shanaya and Jumikah Donovan from Catherine McAuley Westmead spoke at and helped lead the smoking ceremony at Holy Family Primary, Emerton.

Shanaya Donovan said this year’s theme was all about acknowledging that Indigenous women are the backbone of society and that they were the first teachers and nurturers and today they are leaders in everything from sport to law.

NAIDOC3

Professional Aboriginal dancer and proud Kamilaroi woman Becky Chatfield led students in learning about the art and culture of dance, explaining that it was the main learning tool for Indigenous children when they are growing up.

"Because of Her, We Can!"- is a very important theme for me, as my family has a lot of strong Aboriginal women and this message is something I hope to pass onto my daughter,’’ she said.

"Celebrating the strength of our women is so important not only for those women but for the next generation as well."

With a wonderful turnout of 60 students and staff, our college community showed great respect and gratitude as we honoured the courage and sacrifice of our servicemen and women. A special thank you to our School Captain, Olivia A, and our Year 7 representative, Diya K, who laid a wreath on behalf of the college. You represented us with dignity and pride. Lest we forget.

Our College ANZAC service was carefully prepared by Elective History students who did a wonderful job in helping our community honour Australia's military personnel, past and present. Each Homeroom group acknowledged one chosen individual and create rows of poppies, reflecting Flanders Fields. Army Cadet Jasmine R proudly filled the role of flag bearer, and even created a floral wreath of crocheted poppies to add a special touch to our ceremony. Lest We Forget.

The Goat Team are on fire! It was a fantastic few days surrounded by Angora goats at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. The students were busy showing the Stud goats from Cullbookie Angora Stud on Monday with Debbie giving them expert advice for out in the ring. That meant Kelsey, Cassandra, Matilda, Addison, Kirrily and Charlotte were in and out of the ring all day parading wonderful examples of angoras. This helped prepare them for the paraders competitions Tuesday with Matilda, Addison and Kirrily in the ring and then our Young Judges Charlotte, Matilda and Kirrily participating in Angora goat and fleece judging. Charlotte made it to the top 9 out of 22 competitors and spoke in the ring to he judge about her placings. One of our wethers was placed 5th out of all the school wethers in the ring and then the day culminated with the Schools Competition Presentations in the ring about raising our angoras at school. Cass and Charlotte did the team proud with a lovely presentation on behalf of the team and ..........the school was awarded Champion for the Schools Presentation! Well done to all involved in the preparation of the goats at school and the presentation!

During the school holidays, two of our Year 10 students, Nathania and Isabel, had the exciting opportunity to attend the NextGen Engineering Day hosted by Qantas at their Sydney Headquarters in Mascot. Held in the James Strong Auditorium, the day brought together a range of guest speakers - from current engineers to recruitment professionals - who shared valuable insights into what it’s really like to work in engineering at Qantas, and the pathways to get there. Nathania and Isabel also got hands-on, taking part in mini challenges and activities designed to showcase the kind of work Qantas engineers do every day. It was an inspiring experience that offered a real-world glimpse into the aviation industry and future career possibilities. A big thank you to Georgie Dunstan and the Qantas Early Talent Team for extending this wonderful opportunity to our students!
