“Because of Her, We Can” - a NAIDOC Week celebration!

12 Jul 2018

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are being celebrated and recognised for the significant contribution they make to families, communities, art, music and culture under the theme of this year’s NAIDOC week (8-15 July).

As part of NAIDOC week celebrations, Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta’s Jarara Indigenous Education, along with Holy Family Primary, Emerton held special events to reflect on this year’s theme, “Because of Her, We Can”.

Former Caroline Chisholm student and proud Wiradjuri woman Ashleigh Bridge was a guest speaker at the event.

Ashleigh spoke about her grandmother’s life and how this has helped Ashleigh and her family to be the people they are today.

“I think Indigenous women in our society are so unsung and overlooked," Ashleigh said.

“I think it is important during NAIDOC Week that we remember our roots. It is really important to remember how far we have come, but also how far we have to go!”

Jarara Aboriginal Education Assistant Ann-Maree Bridge said she loves working with her students and that they are so proud of their Aboriginal culture.

“It is about celebrating the fact we are all Australian people, but Aboriginal Australians were here first," she said.

“It’s about celebrating our culture and getting everyone involved and saying it is not about us and them, it is about everyone and having fun.”

Shanaya and Jumikah Donovan from Catherine McAuley Westmead spoke at and helped lead the smoking ceremony at Holy Family Primary, Emerton.

Shanaya Donovan said this year’s theme was all about acknowledging that Indigenous women are the backbone of society and that they were the first teachers and nurturers and today they are leaders in everything from sport to law.

NAIDOC3

Professional Aboriginal dancer and proud Kamilaroi woman Becky Chatfield led students in learning about the art and culture of dance, explaining that it was the main learning tool for Indigenous children when they are growing up.

"Because of Her, We Can!"- is a very important theme for me, as my family has a lot of strong Aboriginal women and this message is something I hope to pass onto my daughter,’’ she said.

"Celebrating the strength of our women is so important not only for those women but for the next generation as well."

Isabelle in Year 10 has taken a hands-on approach to exploring her future pathway in civil construction, gaining a front-row seat to the Mulgoa Road Upgrade Project, during a valuable week of work experience with Seymour Whyte. From observing this major road construction project up close, to developing valuable transferable workplace skills and gaining a wider perspective of her potential future pathway, Isabelle has made the most of this incredible opportunity to explore where her career could lead. A huge thank you to Seymour Whyte for supporting our students and opening the door to real-world learning!

A wonderful group of our Year 10 and Year 11 students embraced a special opportunity to spread joy and kindness to residents at Glenmore Park Care Community, Hardi Aged Care (Mountainview, Penrith) and Summitcare Penrith, alongside Mrs Larsen, Ms Morley and Mr Adam MacNamara. On behalf of the hundreds of CCC students who wrote personal Christmas card messages, our students spent time meeting, chatting, and sharing festive cheer with residents — an annual tradition that means so much to us as a college community. Some of the residents at Hardi Aged Care were even treated to an impromptu singing of carols by Gianna in Year 10. Members of our College Choir will return to Glenmore Park Care Community later this week for a special Christmas Carol performance alongside Mr Caws and Ms Wall. This was a truly special morning, connecting generations through simple acts of Christmas kindness. Our social post below is based on a card design created by Year 7 student, Kiara. Her creation, along with designs by Olivia, Caitlin and Caitlyn (also in Year 7) were used for the cover artwork for this year's Christmas cards.

Our Year 7 girls made a splash at Life Saving Day! From practising DRSABCD and rescue techniques to survival sculling and safe water entries, the students were fully engaged in building vital life-saving skills. Of course, we couldn’t resist adding some fun—retrieving “sinkies” brought out everyone’s competitive side! These skills empower students to act with confidence in an emergency, and we’re so proud of their effort and enthusiasm!

🔥 Despite the scorching heat on Saturday, staff and students from the College still showed up to serve on the Vinnies Van run. Patrons were welcomed with Zooper Doopers and ice-cold cordial to help them cool down, along with homemade fruit cake, candy canes, and beautiful handmade cards filled with heartfelt messages from our students to celebrate the Christmas season. Even in extreme weather, the generosity and compassion of our community continue to shine.
