Students from five schools in the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta (CEDP) embraced the opportunity to be taught the ingenuity needed to be successful in the modern workplace when Macquarie University’s Faculty of Business and Economics, along with Incept Labs, ran a Business Innovation Challenge (BIC).
The event was held at the Optus Innovation Hub in Macquarie Park with students from Caroline Chisholm College, Glenmore Park, Cerdon College, Merrylands, Xavier College, Llandilo, St Columba’s Catholic College Springwood and Marian College, Kenthurst attending.
Incept Labs co-founder and executive director Dr Robert Kay said BIC offers secondary students real business problems to solve over two days.
“Students work outside their comfort zone, are divided up into groups and have to work collaboratively on an authentic problem faced by one of our business partners in this case Optus Business and their client IAG. They then have to interview and pitch to representatives of the business partner in three learning cycles, leading up to a final idea and pitch,’’ Dr Kay said.
“The idea behind this is to present students with an authentic business problem ensuring the skills they develop during the challenge are readily transferable to the real world, thereby providing a unique participatory style of education to complement and augment learning in school and university,’’ Dr Kay said.
The challenge was for students to consider the potential impacts of denial of service and ransomware-type attacks on a ‘connected’ home. They also had to identify the risks to people and assets this problem involved and identify innovative approaches to reduce their cyber risk.
Caroline Chisholm Partnership Manager Dianne Mills said this challenge was a great way to help make students “comfortable with being uncomfortable”.
“It taught them to develop the confidence to take risks, to think about the questions they need to ask to get the answers they need for their solution,” Mrs Mills said.
“It has been really great to see our girls get into the challenge and naturally fit into their roles within their groups and work as a team.’’
Cerdon College HSIE teachers Katarina Brizgala and Jasmina Drageljevic said it gave them experience working with students in a 21st century learning environment outside of an ordinary school setting.
“For us, it was a challenge to take a step back and not give the students answers when we could see they were struggling with aspects of their work. The students seemed to struggle with the concept that there is no right answer as they are used to that validation,’’ Miss Brizgala said.
All the groups had a chance to win several trophies based on: Best Idea, Best Group Work and Best Pitch.
Caroline Chisholm student Sakshi Singh, who was part of the winning group for Best Pitch, said she was nervous working amongst a group of people she did not know.
“My nerves soon disappeared after our group bonded so well together,” Sakshi said. “The biggest lesson I took away from the experience was to accept other people’s ideas to get the best solution.’’
Xavier College student Kayne Maharaj, who was part of the winning group for Best Group Work said he was happy the team went with his idea; however, learning to pitch it with confidence was his challenge.
“I had to learn about networking in 48 hours and now I am the network King!”

Our Year 11 Hospitality 1 students have been busy completing two practical lessons as part of their competency task for Module 2: Participate in Safe Food Handling Practices. Students prepared Vietnamese rice paper rolls with dipping sauce and Marinated chicken pockets, demonstrating their ability to work safely and hygienically in a commercial kitchen environment. As part of the task, students were required to follow a HACCP analysis and revisit each stage of the food handling process, from receiving ingredients through to service. They identified potential contaminants, control measures and documented critical information such as food temperatures. Great work!

On Tuesday, our Junior Girls Touch Football team competed at the NSW All Schools Touch Championships held at The Kingsway. The girls enjoyed a successful day of competition, progressing through the pool rounds and earning a place in the quarter-finals. There, they came up against strong opposition and, despite giving their all until the final whistle, were unfortunately knocked out of the tournament. Throughout the day, the team displayed outstanding sportsmanship, determination, resilience, and grit. They consistently supported one another, competed with enthusiasm, and represented Caroline Chisholm College with pride both on and off the field. Their exemplary conduct did not go unnoticed, with two referees taking the time to compliment the girls on their behaviour, attitude, and skill level throughout the competition. Congratulations to all players on a fantastic effort and for being such wonderful ambassadors for our College. We are incredibly proud of your achievements! We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the parents, family members, and friends who came along to support the team throughout the day. Your encouragement from the sidelines was greatly appreciated and helped create a positive and supportive atmosphere for our players.

Year 7.4 History students explored the history and significance of the Terracotta Warriors, learning about their connection to China's first emperor and their role in protecting him in the afterlife. Drawing on their understanding of this ancient archaeological discovery, students then used air-dry clay to design and create their own Terracotta Warrior sculptures. This hands-on activity encouraged creativity while helping students develop a deeper appreciation of ancient Chinese culture and craftsmanship.

Year 12 student Taylah is currently undertaking the Introduction to Aviation Operations Microcredential, courtesy of Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese and hosted by Western Sydney University at their Parramatta City campus. Over two days, Taylah is joining fellow CSPD students to gain valuable industry knowledge and practical skills, led by aviation experts, that will support her aspirations of pursuing a career in cabin crew and developing a deeper understanding of the sector. This experience complements the incredible opportunities Taylah has already embraced, including her mentoring with Kalinda Petrovski at Qantas and her participation in the Cabin Crew Immersion Day with the Qantas Early Talent Team. Together, these experiences are helping Taylah build industry knowledge, connections and confidence as she works towards her dream career. This incredible opportunity has allowed Taylah to further strengthen her qualifications and readiness for life beyond school as she prepares for take-off into the aviation industry. A big thank you to Grant Jackson, experienced nurse and educator with Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD), for hosting today's fascinating Lunch & Learn and giving our students a front-row seat to careers in nursing and allied health. With many of our students undertaking the Certificate III in Health Services Assistance and Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance each year, Grant's visit was a timely opportunity to learn more about these EVET courses, the application process and the many pathways available within the healthcare sector. Drawing on his extensive experience as a nurse, Grant shared valuable insights into his own career journey and pathways into the sector. He also highlighted the rewarding impact that nurses and allied health professionals make every day in our local community. We have no doubt that our students left inspired by the possibilities ahead and motivated to explore careers where they can make a real difference in the lives of others.
