Inspiring Innovators

16 Nov 2018

Caroline Chisholm Catholic College Glenmore Park

Caroline Chisholm College, Glenmore Park students have been recognised as some of the most innovative young problem solvers in Australia!

Year 8 students Courtney Hamilton, Tia Stevenson, Jamie Wilkinson, Chanel Cunningham, Ella Yeomans and Stephanie Young recently put themselves forward in the GoIT challenge, making it through to the 2018 finals held at the University of NSW. Both teams came away award winners!

The GoIT challenge calls on Year 8 students across Australia to form teams of three and use the learning strands of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to solve real-world problems.

Teammates, Courtney Hamilton, Tia Stevenson and Jamie Wilkinson, did their school proud with their award winning submission, Protect Our Planet. Designed to highlight environmental issues, such as global warming, their multiple platform game showed how students could be empowered to make a difference in their world, through action. They were honoured to receive the “Most Innovative School 2018” award.

For their submission titled IVolunteer, teammates, Chanel Cunningham, Ella Yeomans and Stephanie Young were awarded the prestigious “Community Project Challenge 2018” award. They received this award in recognition of the way their software application, designed for both android and iOS platforms, is aimed at encouraging individuals to assist those within the community who are less fortunate than themselves.

The GoIT challenge inspires students to think differently about technology as a solution-focused resource. It does this at a time in their life when they are reflecting on how they see themselves in relation to technology, and as they move through the next few years of high school.

Our Year 10 SRC Leaders headed into the CBD for an incredible leadership experience at IBM headquarters in Sydney, taking part in an inspiring workshop made possible through a partnership with Crazy Ideas College(CIC). The event brought together young women from diverse backgrounds to connect, share ideas and learn from IBM mentors in a space that celebrated success, addressed real-world challenges and empowered students to imagine a fairer future for everyone. Students further developed their leadership skills, explored future career pathways and connected with inspiring female leaders from this leading global organisation. Through CIC’s Lead4Impact (L4i) model, participants gained valuable tools and mindsets for leadership - empowering them to shape their futures and create positive change in their schools and communities. A huge thank you to Julian and Zali at Crazy Ideas College, as well as IBM, for providing such an incredible opportunity for our students to continue growing and thriving as leaders.

On Wednesday last week, the elective Dance classes ventured into the city to watch The Great Gatsby - A Dance Odyssey at the Capitol Theatre. It was an amazing opportunity for the girls to view a live performance in such a beautiful old theatre. They represented our College exceptionally and interacted well with the general public, even helping some of the older patrons up and down the stairs. It was a wonderful way to spend a Wednesday.

Last week the Year 12 Legal Studies students stepped beyond the classroom and into the heart of the justice system as they visited Penrith Local Courts. Students had the opportunity to observe real life court proceedings, notably sentencing procedures, witness testimony and the cells below the Court House. It was brilliant to see such enthusiasm from the students, just in time for their next assessment task on Crime.

Caroline Chisholm College was proudly represented in partnership with Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese and Business Western Sydney at the ‘Business Western Sydney International Women’s Day Luncheon’ last Friday, alongside members of the CSPD Executive. Deputy Premier of NSW Prue Car delivered the keynote address. A distinguished alumnae of Caroline Chisholm College, and former College Captain, the Deputy Premier shared her hopes for young women in Western Sydney and later took a selfie with our current student leaders and Principal Mrs Tania Cairns - a special moment capturing the connection between past and present generations of Caroline Chisholm women. It was a powerful reminder of what our students can aspire to and the impact our graduates continue to have in the community. It was a proud moment to see the Deputy Premier share her inspiring story at the luncheon. Our Captains also gave a vote of thanks, emphasising that while women have made many gains, there is still much work to be done to balance the scales for women in 2026. This event was a wonderful reminder of the strength of our community, with past and present Chisholm women representing the College with pride.

In Year 8 History, students have been learning about the Viking Age, with a particular focus on Viking exploration and their methods of transportation. As part of this topic, students explored how longships enabled Vikings to travel vast distances across rivers, seas, and oceans, reaching places as far as Europe and beyond. Students had the opportunity to “build” their own longships in class, applying their knowledge of design features.

Year 7 students are studying ancient Egypt, including the clothing and jewellery worn by different social groups in the New Kingdom period. 7HSIE1 students enjoyed recreating part of the material culture of Egypt by making beaded bracelets with the symbol of ma'at (balance and justice), in the style of upper class women.

On Saturday night senior students Aleena, Audrey, Dilpreet & Rachel had the opportunity to volunteer with Vinnies Van, serving meals and offering a warm welcome to members of our community who are experiencing hardship. This experience was a powerful reminder that small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Through service, our students not only supported those in need, but also embodied our school values of compassion, dignity, and social justice. A huge thank you to our students for giving their time and hearts to this important work, and to our Staff volunteers (Mrs Clifton, Mrs Koz and Mrs Chan) for their guidance and support. #FaithInAction #FaithThroughService

Our Hospitality students did a fantastic job welcoming guests during our recent Open Night, showcasing their skills in the commercial kitchen. Visitors were treated to a selection of drinks and delicious treats, all prepared and served by our students. Our talented baristas confidently prepared and served freshly made coffee and hot chocolate. It was wonderful to see students engaging with guests, working as a team, and proudly sharing what they have been learning in Hospitality. A great example of students applying their practical skills in a real-world setting!
