Inspiring the young is demanding but rewarding

Caroline Chisholm College Glenmore Park Principal Tania Cairns.

Name:

Tania Cairns

Title:

Principal at Caroline Chisholm College Glenmore Park.

What do you do in your job?

No two days are the same. I love greeting students as they arrive at school, visiting classes and learning about students. I meet with staff and students throughout the day, listening to concerns, solving problems and ensuring optimal learning and wellbeing.

What first sparked your interest in teaching, and what have you done?

I’m inspired to make a difference to the lives of young people who face challenges like climate change, increasing mental health needs and the dynamic nature of the future of work. I love being a positive role model, inspiring students to be all they can be.

I have worked in a variety of roles in Catholic education over the last 35 years, from PDHPE teacher to leadership roles in learning, curriculum, school compliance and wellbeing. I was Principal of Penola Catholic College before becoming Principal Leader of Caroline Chisholm College, an all-girls’ college in the heart of Western Sydney, Penrith.

What do you like most about the job?

I love responding to new challenges each day, creating a learning community where positive relationships are at the forefront of all we do. We want our students to experience success each day and have strong, caring support networks to grow and flourish.

What was the most unexpected thing you have had to do in your job?

I have taught many different subjects, but the most unusual was a Year 12 Living Skills course that involved changing car tyres, checking oil and preparing meals on a budget. It was a lot of fun.

What is the worst thing you have had to do?

The most difficult aspect has been dealing with the loss of a student or staff member. It’s hard to be the “tower of strength” when you are also impacted by such events. My faith gives me strength and empathy as a leader to support my community in those times.

What challenges have you faced during the pandemic?

It has been a challenge that has changed the nature of teaching and learning but also helped us to better appreciate the “real” face-to-face experience we have as a community of learners. Educators learned we are more adaptive, innovative and creative than we ever imagined. Students were receptive to online learning but very excited about the social dimensions of returning to school.

How transferable are your skills?

Our interpersonal and relational skills allow us to work in a variety of ways and contexts. Very applicable skills from my postgraduate health qualifications and past customer service roles are effective communication, creative thinking, problem-solving and critical thinking, collaboration and empathy.

What advice do you have for people wanting to get into teaching?

Teaching is an incredibly rewarding career where you play a part in shaping the lives of young people, creating opportunities where they aspire to achieve exceptional goals and enjoy a worthwhile and fulfilling future.

What personal skills do people need?

Most important are being able to listen carefully, be patient, communicate effectively, be adaptive, think creatively and always be empathetic to students as learners. Teachers need the ability to multitask and to collaborate.

Alumni help students plan their future path

Year 11 students at Caroline Chisholm College have some big decisions to make before they graduate high school in 2026; lucky for them, a panel of accomplished former students recently joined the cohort for the annual Careers High Tea to share their knowledge. Amongst the former students were the first captain of the college, an Aussie sporting star, a secondary educator, an ABC journalist, the head of marketing for a global brand, and a doctor.

🎉 Congratulations to the Intermediate Basketball Team on an incredible victory in Season 3 of the CSPD Thursday Sport competition! 🎉 In a nail-biting game that went right down to the wire, the Caroline Chisholm team rose to the occasion, battled a tough opponent, and sealed a thrilling two-point win in the final minute. I am extremely proud of every member for their outstanding sportsmanship, commitment to improving their skills, and unwavering support for one another throughout the season. A huge thank you to the following people who made this achievement possible: * Ebony, our inspiring team captain, for leading with determination, passion, and commitment throughout the tournament. * Mrs Peters for her motivating words, encouragement, and steadfast support every step of the way. * Mr McIlveen for organising Thursday Sport and cheering the team on with energy and enthusiasm during the Finals. * Annabelle and Adut for their tireless work, dedication, and positive spirit on the bench. * To the wonderful parents, guardians, and friends who came to support the team – your cheers and encouragement lifted the players and made a real difference. What a Lunch & Learn it was today as we welcomed back Class of 2014 graduate, Bernadette Fam, who shared her creative career in the Australian theatre scene in front of a big audience of a different kind! Bernadette has worked with a range of leading theatre companies in Sydney and Melbourne, with her work powerfully exploring identity, belonging and cultural connection. She shared her early career journey with our students — including the bold choice not to take up her initial offer into Law, and instead follow her passion into the world of theatre. Since then, Bernadette has immersed herself in directing, dramaturgy, theatre-making and mentoring, carving out a dynamic and inspiring pathway in the independent theatre space. Her presentation explored the many pivots and possibilities within the arts and offered incredible advice for our students. One standout message: “If there’s something you want to do, there’s not just one pathway to get there — chase skills, not titles, and the opportunities will come to you.” For those passionate about drama, storytelling and the arts, this was truly one not to miss — and an exciting reminder of the diverse and fulfilling careers available in the creative industries.

On Wednesday 19 November, the CCC Lyrical Company were invited to perform at the Captivate Arts Festival which showcases dance works from schools across the diocese. Year 8 student Sophia R was also invited to perform a solo dance for which she received first place at the Arts Factor Dance Eisteddfod. Industry professional Zoey Black personally chose students from various schools to be a part of a work created specifically for the Festival. Although we had four students selected, Makenzie C (year 9) was the only one who could commit to the lengthy weekly rehearsals. She represented our College extremely well in this work. Congratulations girls!

Yzzy and Nav, our year 10 students on term exchange in Japan have settled in wonderfully. Their host families have welcomed them like their own, with shared dinners, outings, and plenty of new foods to try, from takoyaki to ramen. At school, they’re enjoying homeroom traditions, clean-up time, delicious bento lunch boxes, and clubs like chorus, handbells, and badminton. They’ve made friends quickly and appreciate how respectful and supportive the Tokyo Junshin school community is. They’ve explored places like The Making of Harry Potter, Mt Fuji, and Inokashira Park Zoo, and are loving Japan’s quiet public transport, convenience stores, and daily routines. We’re proud of how positively they’re embracing every part of the experience. We will be welcoming 2 Japanese students from our sister school for 8 weeks in term 1 next year. We a looking for host families for them now. Hosting is a fabulous life experience filled with unforgettable memories. Following their recent 2nd place in the Australian Catholic University VOYSE Social Enterprise Challenge — the One Stop Swap team have taken part in an exclusive Lunch and Learn mentoring session with entrepreneur Lee Ussher, founder of Buzz Web Media. This mentoring opportunity was part of a package, which also included a $500 cash prize. During the session, Lee provided the team with targeted feedback on their concept and insightful suggestions for taking their social enterprise project to the next phase — including social media, branding and direct marketing strategies. Lee also shared her own fascinating career journey, from beginning as a primary school educator to developing her own groundbreaking and unique business model. Her broader discussion encouraged students to reflect on their own pathways and offered practical advice for shaping their future career aspirations. We are very grateful to Lee for sharing her time and expertise with the team and a sincere thank you to Adjoa Assan and ACU for organising and catering this fantastic opportunity for our students.

A huge thank you to Alison Hall and the Western Weekender for their fabulous support of our recent Careers High Tea. The latest edition features a wonderful article that perfectly captures the spirit and essence of our event. We also want to extend a big congratulations to Year 12 student Rhianna, who was featured in the story. Rhianna truly embraces the many opportunities available in the pathways space, and she continues to be a role model for others as she explores her exciting future — wherever it may lead.
