Students test their Agricultural skills

31 May 2018

Caroline Chisholm Catholic College Glenmore Park

Senior students took the lead in helping organise the first-ever combined Catholic Colleges Agriculture Show recently.

Penola Catholic College, Emu Plains hosted the event which saw around 60 senior and junior students from Caroline Chisholm Catholic College, Bligh Park and Xavier Catholic College, Llandilo participate.

Penola Primary Industry teachers, Nadine Sibbald, said the show gave the students the opportunity to develop skills in washing, grooming, handling, parading and judging beef cattle. They then competed in judged events to practise the skills they had learnt.

"This was a great opportunity for the students to experience peer-to-peer teaching,” Mrs Sibbald said. “The senior students got to practise their mentoring skills and lead the junior students in helping them develop their skills with beef cattle."

“We also decided to participate in Western Sydney University Unischools Steer Comp, where students are given up to 100 days to raise a steer,’’ she said.

“When we decided to do this, our Principal Tania Cairns advised us to put a call out to other schools to see if they also wanted to participate. We then decided it would be a good idea to have our own Agricultural Show!’’

The overall champion student for the parading category show was Nicholas Psathas with first in the heat's going to Liam Hall and Nathan Gregory (Seniors) and Nicholas Psathas and Nicholas Dura (Juniors).

The overall champion for the judging category was Caroline Chisholm student Bailey Mitchell. Chris Dixon won the seniors category.

The training sessions during the day were led by the senior students. Penola student Skye Baxter played a key role in organising the event.

Special presenters for the day were Nikki Vaughan and Nicholas Hareszceuk from Double n Cattle Company and Tahlia Chandler from Sunset Park Livestock. Wairake and Babana Stud Cattle Studs provided the red poll heifers and cows for use on the day.

When it comes to fascinating career stories, Trudy Dunn (Class of 1994) had quite a tale to share with our students at today’s Lunch & Learn. As a proud alumnae of the College, Trudy began her career in the hospitality industry, where her love of cooking and food led her to complete apprenticeships as both a chef and pastry chef—spending 8 years mastering her craft. With the support of her parents, she entered the workforce straight out of school, building a strong foundation of transferable skills that would shape an incredibly diverse career. After starting a family, the demanding hours of hospitality saw Trudy pivot into the logistics industry, using her strengths in organisation, teamwork and customer service to embrace a whole new professional direction. And then came her next big change—becoming a Librarian! Trudy is about to complete a Diploma of Library and Information Services, bringing her career journey full circle, as she returned to Caroline Chisholm College for a month-long practicum with our very own Mrs Clifton in the Library. Trudy shared wonderful words of wisdom with our students, emphasising the value of education, the power of transferable skills and a clear message: Don’t be afraid to change direction if things aren’t going as planned—try something new! Her love of libraries, community and teaching has brought her back to school… but who knows where her journey will take her next? We can’t wait to find out! Thank you, Trudy, for inspiring our students with your story.

Celebrating Our Year 10 Pathways Achievements! This morning we took the opportunity to acknowledge our dedicated Year 10 students who have embraced the numerous Pathways initiatives on offer throughout this year at Caroline Chisholm College. From university showcases and Lunch & Learn sessions with our alumnae and industry partners, to coaching conversations, STEM workshops and excursions, the Greater Western Sydney Careers Market, entrepreneurship and social justice partnerships, and work-readiness programs — our students have enabled themselves to discover and prepare for their futures. This sets a strong foundation for Years 11 and 12 when they will continue engaging in personalised Pathways coaching conversations to craft their post school plans. Collectively, over 170 of our Year 10s have engaged over 800 times with Pathways opportunities this year! Today, students received their exclusive Bronze, Silver and Gold Pathways Accreditation credentials - a reflection of their commitment and personal investment in shaping their post-school plans. These will be invaluable additions to their resumes and portfolios, when they apply for work, early entry programs and other opportunities over the coming years. We are incredibly proud of the way our Year 10s have stepped up, invested time, and taken positive, proactive steps towards achieving their goals. Congratulations Year 10 on your commitment, courage and enthusiasm as you invest in your future career pathways!

With a healthy careers outlook on the agenda, today’s Lunch & Learn gave our students a fantastic opportunity to meet alumnae Rianna Nicotera (Class of 2022) and Hannah Norrie (Class of 2019) — two former CCC students who have turned their passion for health and helping others into meaningful careers with OnePointHealth, right here in our local community! Rianna is currently a Dietitian Cadet, gaining hands-on experience supporting the administration and marketing teams while shadowing OnePoint Health’s dietetics specialists. Her role offers a rare insight into both the clinical and operational sides of healthcare. Hannah began her journey in OnePointHealth's Cadet Program and has since grown into a qualified Strength and Conditioning Coach. She now works both in-clinic and in the community, supporting athletes across Panthers Juniors, Nepean FC, and ERNA Netball with performance and injury prevention programs. Both Hannah and Rianna shared such practical and timely advice — from coping with unexpected changes in your career path, to putting your best effort into school, building networks that open doors, and taking confident first steps into life after Year 12. It was also wonderful to hear them speak about the supportive culture at OnePointHealth and the opportunities offered through their signature Cadet Program. And in a special full-circle moment, Hannah even had some of the gymnastics athletes she coaches in the audience! Thank you to Hannah and Rianna for your time today and also to OnePointHealth for another valuable opportunity to showcase Caroline Chisholm career success stories at your organisation.
