Penrith and South West school leaders share their hopes for 2024

School’s back for another year and Sydney’s brightest, creative and talented students are leading the way to motivate their peers as captains.

Leaders from year 6 and 12 across the city’s public and private schools have shared what they are looking forward to most in the new year, and what they hope to achieve as school leaders.

Meet our young and upcoming leaders for 2024.


Corpus Christi Primary Cranebrook

Lily Manners is excited to make a difference at her school and learn what it's like to be a leader.

Lily wants to do medical studies after school and be a school teacher or dance teacher. In 2024, she hopes to achieve her learning goals and try new things with confidence.

Fellow school leader, Elijah Vella is an avid writer and is looking forward to working with others in a positive way so that everyone has a year to reach goals.

Elijah aspires to be an auto electrician like his dad. "He does things that fix fire trucks to make them work."

At Our Lady of the Way Primary Emu Plains, Lucas is looking forward to being a leader and starting new things to help the school.

Lucas hopes to become an engineer or possibly make it as an NRL player after finishing school.

Charley has always wanted to become school captain ever since kindergarten and wants to help her peers be the best they can be.

Ruby ran for school captain because she loves helping teachers and students. She wants to make her school a great place for students to learn and teachers to teach.

Emmaus Catholic College Kemps Creek leaders Isabella and Peter.


Isabella Brglevski is excited to engage with the Emmaus school community and represent them in the wider society. Isabella admired the leadership team as a junior and is honoured to have been elected by her peers and teachers to maintain the servant leadership of previous captains.

Isabella wants to pursue further education in psychological science and eventually combine her passion for law and psychology to become a forensic psychologist.

Fellow school leader Peter Sara ran for school captain to help show those who struggled with a voice to find theirs and to show that anyone can try for a leadership position. Peter wants to achieve higher results in his studies and help create a stronger sense of community.

After school, Peter aspires to major in architecture and do further study in civil engineering.

Audrey Cocks became a school captain to share her love of learning with others in the hope others can enjoy school as much as she does.

“School is a gift, I wanted people to have the love and passion for the school I do, and to embrace learning every day because if you do school can be so gratifying.”

Her goal as leader is to become a confidant who “all students felt comfortable to come and talk to about anything”.

Fellow leader Sofia Maiorana wants to make her peers “become the best young women and learners they can be”.

She hopes to achieve this by showing others how to be kind and respectful to each other.

Beyond the school gates Sofia has set herself the goal of studying either medicine or medical science at University and make a career out of “helping others through their most vulnerable moments.”

As vice captain Aurelia Parsley is excited about the possibilities which lay ahead and collaborating with her leadership colleagues to enact meaningful changes and improvements in the school.

After school Aurelia plans to pursue a career either in agriculture or conservation and research with a specific interest in learning about sustainable agriculture practises.


Xavier College, Llandilo

Georgia Grady became a school leader because she wanted to make a positive difference in her school community, reaching that goal has been “exhilarating” and her “biggest accomplishment”.

In how she hopes her 2024 will shape up Georgia says she wants to achieve podium ranks in at least three subjects before graduating to University.

Similarly, fellow captain Jai Johnstone is immensely proud to call himself a school captain and have the opportunity to enact change.

“To be elected felt like a seal of approval from my peers, and gave me the confidence needed to be the best captain I can be.”

In looking beyond the school gates Jai wants to gain admission into the University of Sydney to study English.


Holy Spirit Primary, St Clair

Kiara Wickramanayaka and Makur Agok from Holy Spirit


Student leaders Kiara Wickramanayaka and Makur Agok make a powerful duo with their combined leadership qualities of enthusiasm, respect, and honesty making their school a great place to learn and grow.

Kiara has set her sights on becoming either a teacher or an environmentalist as she believes “we are all stewards of creation and should care about taking care of the environment”.

“I want to teach others how important this is.”

Makur’s hope for the future is to play soccer and travel to South Sudan with his family where he will raise money to provide fresh drinking water, food and jobs to the community over there.


St Mary MacKillop Primary, South Penrith

Jack Vella and Capri Wallace.


School captain Capri Wallace threw her hat into the ring for leadership roles because she wanted “to be an approachable role model who is happy to make a difference”.

Looking beyond her schooling years Capri wants to improve her singing and become a singer and travel to Italy and see the Isle of Capri - the place she’s named after.

Fellow captain Jack Vella says it’s been “a huge honour” to be apart of the school leadership team and a wonderful opportunity to show people kindness and inclusiveness in the world.


Penola Catholic College, Emu Plains

As Penola Catholic College’s leadership duo Imelda Wright and Benjamin Norris are focusing their efforts on being role models and voices for the school.

Benjamin said his goal was to “lock in place the improvements” he’d made in his younger years and give back to the school community by “leaving the school better than it was”.

Imelda shares a similar leadership vision, as school captain she recognises her role as “to reflect what the student community wants”.

Meanwhile, College vice captains are out to leave a legacy of their own, Montana La Rosa says during her leadership she wants to leave a lasting positive impression so “when we’re gone students will say ‘remember those school leaders’.

Fellow vice captain Charlie Thomas is motivated to lead by example by “helping others with their problems”.

Our Japanese students began the day with a scenic train journey over the Seto Ōhashi Bridge, an engineering marvel stretching across the sea to connect Honshu with Shikoku Island. Their first stop was the breathtaking Ritsurin Garden, famous for its ponds, arched bridges, and carefully pruned pine trees that have been shaped for hundreds of years. For lunch, we enjoyed Sanuki udon, Shikoku’s most famous dish. In the afternoon, the group took part in a traditional temari-making workshop. Temari, meaning “hand ball,” began centuries ago as a children’s toy made from scraps of old kimono fabric. Over time, they evolved into highly decorative works of art, with colourful silk threads wrapped and stitched into intricate geometric patterns. Our students learned the techniques from expert artisans and were amazed by the patience and precision required to create such delicate designs. They each left with their own handmade temari as a special keepsake of their time in Japan. The day finished back in Okayama where some students enjoyed sushi delivered to them by train!

Our Japanese students started the day exploring Korakuen, one of Japan’s three most famous gardens, where they enjoyed the beauty of ponds, tea houses, and carefully landscaped scenery. We were very lucky to be there on one of the special days when cranes (tsuru) walk around the garden. We then visited Okayama Castle, known as the “Crow Castle” for its striking black exterior, and learned about its rich samurai history. In the afternoon, we wandered through the historic Kurashiki Bikan district, with its preserved canals, white-walled storehouses, and old merchant houses now filled with shops and galleries. Our flagging energy was renewed with two hours of karaoke!

Our Japanese students began the day at Miyajima, admiring the iconic floating torii gate up close at low tide. From there, we travelled to Hiroshima, visiting the A-Bomb Dome and the Peace Memorial Museum, reflecting on the importance of peace and reconciliation. At the Peace Park, we took part in a deeply moving experience, offering 1,000 folded paper cranes at Sadako’s statue, a symbol of peace and hope for children worldwide. We were excited to buy our first konbini lunch before the excitement of a bullet train ride to Okayama.

As is the tradition in a ryokan, we all wore yukata on the premises. There were so many different dishes presented beautifully. Student favourites were sukiyaki and tempura. Local delicacies included oysters and anago (conger eel).

After an overnight flight to Tokyo and a connecting flight to Hiroshima, our Japanese students made their way by bus and ferry to the beautiful island of Miyajima. Famous for its “floating” torii gate, Miyajima is considered one of the most scenic places in Japan and has long been a site of spiritual significance. We are staying in a traditional ryokan, where tatami rooms and futon beds give us a true taste of Japanese culture. Today’s challenge was to take a selfie with a deer! We ate the local specialty, okonomiyaki for lunch, and tonight, we will enjoy a multi-course kaiseki dinner, with seasonal dishes beautifully prepared and presented.

We were thrilled to have five female Penrith Panthers players join us today to assist in awarding our PDSSSC Thursday sport teams' MVP players as well as engage in a question and answer session with Mrs Peters. It was so inspiring to hear from talented female athletes who juggle work, parenting and family demands as well as excel in the sport that they love. Thank you also o Mrs Peters for organising the Panthers protein shakers and flags that were awarded to 60 students that were present today.

Today the Caroline Chisholm Community celebrated jersey day. Student's came to school in their team colours to support and raise awareness for organ and tissue donation. Jersey Day was inspired by the gift of life that Nathan Gremmo gave to six people when he became an organ donor at age 13. Jersey day aims to encourage people to begin the conversation with their family and friends about the importance of becoming an organ and tissue donor.

The results are in - and we are delighted and proud to announce that our Year 10 team has achieved 2nd place in this year’s Australian Catholic University VOYSE Social Enterprise Challenge! Over the course of the 8-week program, our students showed outstanding dedication, creativity, determination and passion as they developed and pitched their innovative social enterprise idea: One Stop Swap. This unique initiative, designed to give used items a second life, certainly caught the judges' eyes! Working within a tight timeframe, the team collaborated to research, design and present their concept to the VOYSE judging panel, impressing with their professionalism and innovative thinking. The panel will also be providing detailed feedback, celebrating the team’s strengths while offering constructive advice, to support the further development of One Stop Swap. Their 2nd place finish is an extraordinary achievement and a testament to their teamwork and entrepreneurial spirit. We are also very grateful to their mentors Adjoa Assan, Vika Pinomi and Lucy Sattler. We are incredibly impressed with the students' efforts and excited to see how they continue to build upon their idea within our community. Congratulations to these talented students on this fantastic result and also to the other finalists: St Agnes Catholic High School, Patrician Brothers' College, Blacktown and Mountain View Adventist College. The College proudly acknowledges and congratulates Sylvie B and Tahlya J on receiving NESA SHAPE nominations for their outstanding Major Textiles Projects in the Textiles and Design course. Sylvie created a striking, dragon-inspired Chinese costume, incorporating a custom-drafted pattern, intricate laser cutting, and detailed hand beading. Tahlya produced a beautifully crafted patchwork quilt, showcasing fabric origami, laser cutting, and a variety of advanced fabric manipulation techniques. We would also like to congratulate the Year 12 Textiles and Design teacher - Miss Azzopardi on sharing her expertise and guidance, to assist with bringing the projects to this outstanding level of completion. In addition, we extend our sincere thanks to mentor teachers, Mrs Larsen and Ms Blakers (Leader of TAS) for their guidance, expertise, and unwavering support throughout the students’ creative journeys.
