Graduates return to inspire next generation of women

Year 12 students at Caroline Chisholm College had full hearts and full bellies after the annual Careers High Tea.

The school welcomed back six alumnae from the Classes of 2000-2022 to act as role models and mentors for the younger generation.

Partnerships and Pathways Coach at the Glenmore Park all-girls school Adam MacNamara said they're very fortunate to have a strong network of former students who are willing to come back and share their stories.

"We call it the sisterhood," MacNamara said.

"Students from the past coming back to guide and mentor our current students who will then go on to pursue their own careers and pathways.

"I think there's a lovely synergy and connection there across the different graduates and generations."

The panelists included ABC News reporter Chantelle Al-Khouri, interior designer and business owner Blaire Marchand, exercise physiologist Isabella La Malfa, general manager of Clinique and Aveda Corinne Duffy, nurse Alana Blowers, and sales associate at Ray White Ava Musumeci.

Year 12 student Amy Jarukrut aspires to join the Australian Defence Force or go into psychology or criminology, and she said it was encouraging to hear from women who graduated before her even though they went down different career paths.

"Even though it didn't line up with my future, it allowed me to get some inspiration on how I should get there," Jarukrut said.

The student said her favourite speaker was Blacktown Hospital nurse Alana Blowers.

"I really enjoyed listening to her because I want to do something with psychology," Jarukrut explained.

"I feel like that was a really nice way to get to know what a nurse life would be like."

The idea of a high tea came about because the school wanted to create a fun and classy event that suited the students.

"Last year we did a breakfast and this year we thought we'd give it another little twist and call it a high tea," MacNamara said.

We are so proud to share some exciting news from one of our Drama students! Chloe has been part of the Captivate Drama Ensemble for the past two terms. Last Thursday night, Chloe and four other students representing CSDP were selected to perform at the Rebel Theatre for Australian Theatre for Young People. In addition to this news, Chloe recently auditioned for JMC Academy and was accepted for early entry into the Bachelor of Creative Arts (Acting). What an incredible achievement and recognition of Chloe’s dedication and passion for Drama. We are so proud of her for embracing these opportunities and continuing to develop her skills as a performer. Congratulations, Chloe! We can’t wait to see what you do next!

As part of their Workplace Communication unit, Year 11 Work Studies have been learning about the importance of effective communication in different work environments. This term our students have been working closely with Bethany Kindergarten teachers to explore how verbal, written and non-verbal communication are used effectively in a school setting. They have enjoyed assisting Kindergarten in learning how to do The Twist in Music, how to name their colours in Italian and how to master ball control in Sport lessons.

Year 9 student, Hanna, achieved third place over the weekend in Canberra in the National Senior Piano Championship (19 Years and Under section). Competitors were required to perform 2–3 contrasting pieces, with a performance time of a minimum of 10 minutes and a maximum of 12 minutes. We are very proud of Hanna’s achievement, especially given she was competing in an age category open to performers up to 19 years old. Well done Hanna.

Over the past few weeks, our Year 11 Hospitality 1 students have been out completing their work placement, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a range of hospitality workplaces. We have been super proud of the way the girls have represented themselves and our College. They have demonstrated professionalism, a strong work ethic, initiative and a willingness to learn. A particularly exciting outcome has been that many of our students were offered casual employment as a result of their placement. This is a wonderful indication of the calibre of our students and the positive impression they have made on their employers. Congratulations to our Year 11 Hospitality 1 students on a fantastic work placement experience! 👏🌟 Here are a few snapshots from their time out in industry. 📸

On Wednesday, 12 August, our Year 10 students attended the Bstreetsmart Safe Driving Excursion 🚗🛣️ Students took part in a powerful and confronting experience designed to increase their awareness of the real-life consequences of road trauma. Through personal stories, practical demonstrations and engaging activities, students explored the major factors that contribute to road crashes, including speed, distraction, fatigue, risk-taking and peer influence. The day provided an important opportunity for students to reflect on the choices and behaviours that can help keep themselves and others safe as drivers and passengers. A valuable experience that we hope will encourage our students to make safe, responsible decisions every time they are on the road. 💙 A big thank you to the PDHPE staff and Mrs Easterbrook for making this day possible.
