Bishop’s Awards celebrate student excellence across Parramatta Diocese

12 Sep 2025

Bishop of Parramatta Student Excellence Awards at St Patrick's Cathedral.

The annual Bishop of Parramatta Award for Student Excellence honours Year 12 students who demonstrate strong leadership, a spirit of service and a lasting impact on their school community.

Held on Thursday 4 September at St Patrick’s Cathedral Parramatta, the event was attended by parents and carers, school representatives, local community members and special guests from Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD) and the Diocese of Parramatta, all gathered to support and celebrate the achievements of exemplary school leaders.

“The many people represented here tonight reminds us that education is shared work - a partnership,” said Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mark Smith. “Together, we place our gifts at the service of something greater than ourselves: the flourishing of young people and the mission of the Gospel.”

Awarded by Most Rev Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv, each recipient was nominated by their school principal for their embodiment of Catholic values and their positive impact on the life of their school. The awards recognise excellence across a wide range of areas, including academic achievement, sporting achievement, creative and performing arts, social justice, vocational education and community involvement.

Mark Smith congratulated the recipients for demonstrating the qualities of tomorrow’s leaders.

“These awards are not simply markers of academic success; they affirm something deeper - your readiness to be people for others and active contributors to a world that is in great need of hope and transformation,” said Mark Smith.

Bishop Vincent shared an inspiring reflection on what true excellence means, and commended the award recipients for their perseverance and unwavering commitment to their school communities.

“It is right and just that we as the Diocesan family recognise excellence, which is achieved by hard work, discipline, dedication and enquiry,” said Bishop Vincent. “The application of these virtues is rooted in the teaching of Christ and it is the cause of celebration tonight.”

"What a great time we are having at the show! The Pig Team excelled today in the ring with our pen of 3 on the hoof taking first place! Thanks to the handlers in the ring Rhianna, Ella Marie and Josie, and to all the Ag team for looking after our pigs so well, preparing them for showing and managing their weight over the term. Then we had Alison and Amelia present to the judge on behalf of the team a slideshow all about Pig Production - they did a fantastic job and placed 3rd in this part of the competition. Our whole team was recognised when awarded Champion in the School Stockmen's competition. This is based on points presented for presentation and grooming of pigs, tidiness and cleanliness of bedding and pens, showmanship, attendance and interactions with the pavilion and with the public. We are so proud of all the girls who have attended and helped out whenever needed with such enthusiasm - they have represented themselves and the school with pride. Just to top off a fantastic day in the ring we were also part of the Grand Parade with the Angora Goats!

This term, Yr 8 Religion students have been exploring the question: Why should we be advocates? In our lessons, students have come to understand that advocacy means standing up for others, especially those whose voices are not always heard. Within our Catholic tradition, this is deeply connected to justice, dignity, and love. As we approach Holy Week, students reflected on how Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of advocacy, standing for truth, defending the vulnerable, and showing unconditional love through his life and sacrifice. Through prayer, reflection, and a symbolic activity, students considered how they can live the message of Easter in their own lives.

Almost every one of us has been touched by cancer in some way - whether through our own experience or through the journey of a family member, friend, or colleague. It is a reality that connects community in both challenge and compassion, reminding us of the importance of care, hope, and support for one another. In this spirit, we were proud to have one of our students take the initiative to support those affected by cancer. Through her efforts, Chloe E of Yr 11 recently made a donation of her own hair to Kids with Cancer Foundation - Wigs4Kids. Her actions reflect the values we strive to live out each day as a Catholic community—showing empathy, service, and a commitment to supporting others. As we are reminded in Scripture, “Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14). We thank her for reminding us all of the difference we can make when we come together with kindness and purpose.
