Bishop’s Awards celebrate student excellence across Parramatta Diocese

12 Sep 2025

Bishop of Parramatta Student Excellence Awards at St Patrick's Cathedral.

The annual Bishop of Parramatta Award for Student Excellence honours Year 12 students who demonstrate strong leadership, a spirit of service and a lasting impact on their school community.

Held on Thursday 4 September at St Patrick’s Cathedral Parramatta, the event was attended by parents and carers, school representatives, local community members and special guests from Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD) and the Diocese of Parramatta, all gathered to support and celebrate the achievements of exemplary school leaders.

“The many people represented here tonight reminds us that education is shared work - a partnership,” said Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mark Smith. “Together, we place our gifts at the service of something greater than ourselves: the flourishing of young people and the mission of the Gospel.”

Awarded by Most Rev Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv, each recipient was nominated by their school principal for their embodiment of Catholic values and their positive impact on the life of their school. The awards recognise excellence across a wide range of areas, including academic achievement, sporting achievement, creative and performing arts, social justice, vocational education and community involvement.

Mark Smith congratulated the recipients for demonstrating the qualities of tomorrow’s leaders.

“These awards are not simply markers of academic success; they affirm something deeper - your readiness to be people for others and active contributors to a world that is in great need of hope and transformation,” said Mark Smith.

Bishop Vincent shared an inspiring reflection on what true excellence means, and commended the award recipients for their perseverance and unwavering commitment to their school communities.

“It is right and just that we as the Diocesan family recognise excellence, which is achieved by hard work, discipline, dedication and enquiry,” said Bishop Vincent. “The application of these virtues is rooted in the teaching of Christ and it is the cause of celebration tonight.”

Our amazing ACU VOYSE Social Enterprise Team have taken the stage at Bowman Hall, Blacktown, to launch and showcase their inspirational business concept - 'One Stop Swap' - to the world! In front of an audience of guests — including ACU leaders, CSPD staff and students, as well as global entrepreneurs and mentors — our students reached the finalist stage of the competition and presented a powerful solution to a real-world problem: giving used items a second life. The event also featured their mentors Adjoa Assan (ACU Blacktown Project Officer / Voice of Young Social Entrepreneurs) and Vika Pinomi, in an engaging and inspiring panel discussion. In less than two months, they have harnessed university-level tools and resources to collaboratively design their enterprise, receiving valuable feedback at the Showcase event from experts and entrepreneurs alike. We could not be prouder of their courage, tenacity, determination, ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit! Thank you to our parents and families who were also on hand at the event to support their daughters' efforts. But the journey isn’t over yet — the team is already back at work, refining their project and creating their final three-minute pitch video for the judging panel. Stay tuned as we cheer them on in the final stage — and wish this incredible team every success! Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

On Thursday, 11 September 2025, Caroline Chisholm College recognised R U OK? Day. This day was created to encourage people to check in on others, particularly those who might be struggling, by simply asking, "R U OK?" The aim is to promote conversations about mental health, strengthen community connections, and help people feel comfortable checking in with others. Having a conversation like this can help people to take action and get help if they need it. All members of the College community, both students and staff, received a conversation starter card and a Kit Kat to encourage individuals to start the conversation. At lunch time Mr McIlveen ran jukebox lunch and students shared time in conversation. Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

A group of Caroline Chisholm's Year 9 and Year 10 students recently embarked on an eye-opening journey into the world of FujiFilm Australia medical imaging, where they were inspired by senior staff who shared their remarkable career stories. A special thank you to Pilar Leon, Maria Barreto, Shammi Abraham, Samantha Leatham and Surein Fernando for inspiring us. Students applied for this Partnerships and Pathways excursion via an EOI process in which they shared their personal career aspirations and reasons for wanting to participate. As members of the Diagnostic Imaging & Monitoring Association (DIMA), Fujifilm Australia and Fujifilm Sonosite are key contributors to the healthcare industry, providing vital imaging and monitoring technologies globally. Through this collaboration with Caroline Chisholm College, Fujifilm are actively promoting careers in STEM. This initiative reflects their broader commitment to closing the gender gap in the industry and inspiring more young women to explore these fields. This exclusive experience for our students highlighted the power of making life-changing decisions, the impact of mentorship, and the importance of embracing challenges with an open heart and mind. Our students discovered that career paths are never fixed — they evolve, offering endless new opportunities for growth and innovation. They learned that focus, curiosity and passion are vital, especially because the work they will one day do may not even exist yet. For anyone who loves science and wants to make a difference by helping others, this field offers a truly exciting pathway. We were reminded of the profound importance of empathy, being fully present, and upholding the highest standards of patient care. Maria’s incredible story about ultrasounding a silverback gorilla beautifully illustrates that sometimes we get to do things we have never imagined, and where you begin is only the start of an extraordinary journey. A big shoutout to one of our valued parents, Stewart O'Connor, for co-ordinating and arranging this great day! Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

We were so honoured to welcome back the inspiring Anna Dimech (Class of 2022) to Caroline Chisholm College this week. Fondly known as “Miss Anna” by her students, she first began her pathway into Early Childhood Education while still at school, completing a Diploma through our College’s innovative Learn+ program in Years 11 and 12. Since then, she has continued to achieve amazing things and is now studying a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education at Charles Sturt University. Anna captivated a huge audience with her wisdom and advice, sharing the key qualities needed to succeed in this rewarding career – such as empathy, patience, initiative, and above all, always putting kids first. She also spoke about the challenges and joys of working in the sector, and the deep sense of gratitude she feels for being part of such an important vocation. Thank you, Anna, for returning to inspire the next generation of learners and educators. We are so proud of your journey and the incredible example you set for our students!
