Inspiring the young is demanding but rewarding

Caroline Chisholm College Glenmore Park Principal Tania Cairns.

Name:

Tania Cairns

Title:

Principal at Caroline Chisholm College Glenmore Park.

What do you do in your job?

No two days are the same. I love greeting students as they arrive at school, visiting classes and learning about students. I meet with staff and students throughout the day, listening to concerns, solving problems and ensuring optimal learning and wellbeing.

What first sparked your interest in teaching, and what have you done?

I’m inspired to make a difference to the lives of young people who face challenges like climate change, increasing mental health needs and the dynamic nature of the future of work. I love being a positive role model, inspiring students to be all they can be.

I have worked in a variety of roles in Catholic education over the last 35 years, from PDHPE teacher to leadership roles in learning, curriculum, school compliance and wellbeing. I was Principal of Penola Catholic College before becoming Principal Leader of Caroline Chisholm College, an all-girls’ college in the heart of Western Sydney, Penrith.

What do you like most about the job?

I love responding to new challenges each day, creating a learning community where positive relationships are at the forefront of all we do. We want our students to experience success each day and have strong, caring support networks to grow and flourish.

What was the most unexpected thing you have had to do in your job?

I have taught many different subjects, but the most unusual was a Year 12 Living Skills course that involved changing car tyres, checking oil and preparing meals on a budget. It was a lot of fun.

What is the worst thing you have had to do?

The most difficult aspect has been dealing with the loss of a student or staff member. It’s hard to be the “tower of strength” when you are also impacted by such events. My faith gives me strength and empathy as a leader to support my community in those times.

What challenges have you faced during the pandemic?

It has been a challenge that has changed the nature of teaching and learning but also helped us to better appreciate the “real” face-to-face experience we have as a community of learners. Educators learned we are more adaptive, innovative and creative than we ever imagined. Students were receptive to online learning but very excited about the social dimensions of returning to school.

How transferable are your skills?

Our interpersonal and relational skills allow us to work in a variety of ways and contexts. Very applicable skills from my postgraduate health qualifications and past customer service roles are effective communication, creative thinking, problem-solving and critical thinking, collaboration and empathy.

What advice do you have for people wanting to get into teaching?

Teaching is an incredibly rewarding career where you play a part in shaping the lives of young people, creating opportunities where they aspire to achieve exceptional goals and enjoy a worthwhile and fulfilling future.

What personal skills do people need?

Most important are being able to listen carefully, be patient, communicate effectively, be adaptive, think creatively and always be empathetic to students as learners. Teachers need the ability to multitask and to collaborate.

On Monday night, Year 12 Dance and Drama students presented their major works including Core Composition, Major Study Performance, Core Performance, Group Performance, 1 Monologue and 2 Video Dramas. Year 12 should be proud of their achievements in their HSC course. The staff at the College encourage them to continue to work on these works and to apply the feedback given to them from their teachers (Mrs Hughes and Mr Cassel) as they approach their practical exams in the upcoming weeks. Lovely job girls! Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

It was wonderful to welcome Tala from the PATHE (Pasifika Achievement To Higher Education) team at Western Sydney University to CCC this week! This important program is all about empowering students from Pacific communities to explore their goals, interests and pathways into further education — through a culturally inclusive and engaging lens. Through workshops designed specifically for students with Pasifika heritage, our students gained valuable insights into careers, training, and what university life could look like. Using the meaningful and powerful symbolism of a Samoan Fale (house) - each year group explored different yet interconnected themes. Years 7 and 8 focused on laying 'strong foundations' for their futures around personal strengths and qualities. Years 9 and 10 looked at understanding their 'pillars of support' and Years 11 and 12 reflected on 'raising the roof' and crowning their school journeys with pride and excellence. Thank you to WSU for your ongoing support and for delivering such an inspiring and meaningful experience! Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

Netball Success Last Friday saw all three netball teams compete in the PDSSSC Gala Day and was a very successful day for our College. Our Junior and Intermediate teams were both victorious taking out the competition to be crowned Champions! Our seniors should also be very proud of their results, experiencing their only loss of the day going down in the Grand Final to Catherine McAuley. Congratulations ladies. We would also like to thank Charlotte B, Charlotte S and Charlie L for carrying out umpiring duties so our three teams could compete in the gala day.

Careers at the soon-to-open Western Sydney International Airport are taking off and so it was very timely to welcome Asha Frost from WSIA to our College, for an insightful and eye-opening showcase of the extensive career opportunities on offer for our students. Located less than 20 minutes from our school gates, WSIA will offer thousands of diverse roles. Asha spoke about jobs not only in airport terminal operations and retail but also environmental roles and opportunities in the massive cargo and business precincts too. With career pathways set to soar, the sky really is the limit with WSIA traineeships, as well as roles with the Australian Border Force, QANTAS, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries & Biosecurity, the Australian Federal Police and more. Thank you Asha for such an incredible overview of this immense and exciting new precinct that has already - and no doubt will in the future - be the workplace for many Caroline Chisholm College graduates! A passionate team of Year 10 change-makers has stepped up to take part in the Australian Catholic University Voice of Young Social Entrepreneurs (VOYSE) Challenge! Over the next 8 weeks, they’ll be working collaboratively to design a social enterprise that drives real, meaningful change in our school community, alongside other schools from across Western Sydney. Through hands-on learning and weekly lunchtime modules, our team will develop their ideas, receive mentoring from ACU student ambassadors, industry experts, and our own Pathways Coaches — and ultimately pitch their concept in a dynamic showcase event this September in Blacktown! A special thank you to Lucy Sattler, CEO of innovative social enterprise Study Work Grow, who kindly took time for an online mentoring session this week - inspiring our students with her wisdom and experience. We can’t wait to see where their ideas take them! @Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

Our Year 7 TECHH students had an exciting and hands-on visit to the Agricultural Farm this week! 🧤🌿 As part of their introduction to the farm, students learned about important routines such as farm safety, watering systems, feeding practices, and how to securely house and care for animals. A highlight of the day was getting to feed the calves 🍼🐮 – a moment full of joy and wide smiles all around! The students were incredibly enthusiastic and are already looking forward to spending more time on the farm over the next two terms. We can’t wait to see them grow their skills and confidence in this dynamic learning environment! 🌱🐑🚜 @Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

Thank you to the University of Notre Dame for an inspiring and informative visit as part of our Discover the UNIverse Lunch & Learn series Our students got a fantastic insight into uni life — from engaging student experiences and a supportive campus community, to global study opportunities and outstanding facilities and programs. Fairose also unpacked key info on school leaver pathways including adjustment factors, the Young Achievers Early Offer program, and the brand-new UniPath initiative.
