Welcome to The Haven

11 May 2018

WelcomeToTheHaven
Caroline Chisholm College teacher Penny Mabon, Georgia Wood and Lindsay federal Labor MP Emma Husar prepare welcome packs for women arriving at The Haven in Penrith.

Six students from Year 12's Kenny House Homeroom have spent a number of months preparing donations and welcome-packs for victims of domestic violence at "The Haven", showing their passion for the survivors of domestic violence.

"We have been raising money for this initiative since November last year," house leader Georgia Wood said.

The students bought supplies with money raised which was between $1000-2000. George said that her fellow homeroom students planned out the items needed for the welcome packs and submitted the proposal to the principal, who then also offered input.

The students spent the afternoon of May 1 filling 100 packs with carefully thought-out necessities such as shampoo, a hairbrush, toothpaste and deodorant.

George said it was important for the community to support facilities like The Haven. “We like to believe we’re a sister school that looks out for each other and the community,” Georgia said.

“With The Haven opening we thought it would be a good idea (to create welcome packs).

“For my school and my homeroom it was something small that we could do.”

The Haven is a shelter for victims of domestic violence and was opened in Penrith by Stuart Ayres and Pru Goward on April 3

The shelter has 19 beds for families escaping domestic violence. Its $400,000 annual budget will be funded by the State Government through Women’s Community Shelters and the community.

Ten very kind and compassionate students helped feed over 110,000 young people in the Philippines — all in one morning! Joining forces with five amazing teammates from St Columba's Catholic College, our Year 10 students — Reanna, Imogen, Amelia, Hannah and Prabhleen — brought community spirit, teamwork and high energy to the Zambrero Plate 4 Plate Meal Packing Day at Carriageworks in Sydney. This inspiring event was part of a nationwide mission in partnership with Rise Against Hunger, to pack over 1 million meals across five states, making a real difference in the fight to end world hunger. It was especially meaningful to have former College Captain, Bianca Azzopardi (Class of 2010), who has held a range of senior leadership roles with Zambrero and the Sam Prince Group over many years, on site to meet our students — a wonderful connection across the sisterhood! A huge thank you to our St Columba’s teammates, and Nicky Alsemgeest for transporting us all, and especially Zambrero for giving our students this unforgettable opportunity to create change on a global scale. Chelsea, Kelsy and Emilia have taken an impressive step toward their future studies by participating in the UniPath Program at The University of Notre Dame Australia. UniPath provides a direct entry pathway into a range of university programs while developing essential academic and uni-readiness skills. The program is open to Year 11 students and delivered across three one-week block intensives during the school holidays. UniPath features courses in Mathematics, Communication, and Research & Academic Writing. Students began in the recent September break and will continue into the upcoming Summer holidays at Notre Dame’s Broadway campus. Taking time out of their holidays to focus on their learning and future goals, Chelsea, Kelsy and Emilia have shown great commitment and initiative. We congratulate them on their efforts and thank The University of Notre Dame for providing this valuable opportunity for students to experience university learning while still at school. In the last week of term, a group of our Year 11 VET Hospitality - Food & Beverage students headed out on work placement to gain authentic industry experience. This valuable opportunity gave them first-hand insight into the hospitality world — developing their skills, confidence, and knowledge as part of their course and qualification. 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳 It was exciting to hear that quite a few students were offered casual jobs, a true reflection of their hard work, professionalism, and the value they bring to the industry. 🌟 Well done to all the students for representing our school so proudly!

Textiles for Sport 👕🎨 Last term, a group of Year 7 students selected Textiles for Sport as their personal interest subject. They created and decorated their own white cotton t-shirts using tie-dye, appliqué with the Cricut machine, beading, sequins, and hand embroidery. The results were amazing! 💫 Everyone had so much fun showing off their creativity and personal style. Check out some of their creative designs

As our Year 12 students prepare for the start of their HSC, we know they’re ready — not just for the exams, but for the endless pathway opportunities that lie ahead! In addition to ongoing conversations with our Pathways Coaches, every Year 12 student took part in personalised careers meetings in Term 3. A huge thank you to our caring and dedicated Year 12 Homeroom team, led by the incredible Mrs Wilson, who met with each student to hear about their goals, aspirations and post school plans for 2026 and beyond. Whether our students are heading to university, TAFE, college, the workforce, planning a gap year or still to decide, they are well prepared for the journey ahead — and we couldn’t be more excited for them! This 'Pathways Star' reflects the many opportunities that Year 12 are exploring based on our conversations, to give you an idea of how their pathways ahead are taking shape. All the best, Year 12 — you’ve got this!

It’s always hard to say goodbye! Sr Mori, Principal of Tokyo Junshin, presented all of our students with a special certificate and a souvenir bag. Then, it was time to say farewell to host sisters and good friends. It is touching to see how such strong friendships can be forged in only a few days. These memories will be treasured for ever, and are hopefully the start of a life long friendly cultural exchange for our students. While sad to say goodbye to Ysabelle and Navroop, we are so excited for them to get to stay even longer. We hope you have enjoyed seeing some of our adventures in Japan. We are sad to leave but can't wait to see Tokyo Junshin students when they visit us again next year. We are so grateful to our hosts, opening up their homes and sharing their daily lives with us. Can you offer a Japanese exchange student the same opportunity? Please contact Mrs Merriman or Mrs Smith for more information.

Our students in Japan have completed their final day at our sister school, enjoying lessons in biology, classics and modern Japanese history. Then, we had some fun lessons with junior high students. CCC students gave presentations about our school and also participated in a treasure hunt around the grounds of Tokyo Junshin. We were also excited to meet Yuri and Shiyu, who will be spending Term 1 2026 at CCC. Our Yr10 Yr10 students were reunited with Eana & Fuyune, who spent Term 1 with us. Anju & Yuna, 2024 term exchange students also came to see us!
