Welcome to The Haven

11 May 2018

WelcomeToTheHaven
Caroline Chisholm College teacher Penny Mabon, Georgia Wood and Lindsay federal Labor MP Emma Husar prepare welcome packs for women arriving at The Haven in Penrith.

Six students from Year 12's Kenny House Homeroom have spent a number of months preparing donations and welcome-packs for victims of domestic violence at "The Haven", showing their passion for the survivors of domestic violence.

"We have been raising money for this initiative since November last year," house leader Georgia Wood said.

The students bought supplies with money raised which was between $1000-2000. George said that her fellow homeroom students planned out the items needed for the welcome packs and submitted the proposal to the principal, who then also offered input.

The students spent the afternoon of May 1 filling 100 packs with carefully thought-out necessities such as shampoo, a hairbrush, toothpaste and deodorant.

George said it was important for the community to support facilities like The Haven. “We like to believe we’re a sister school that looks out for each other and the community,” Georgia said.

“With The Haven opening we thought it would be a good idea (to create welcome packs).

“For my school and my homeroom it was something small that we could do.”

The Haven is a shelter for victims of domestic violence and was opened in Penrith by Stuart Ayres and Pru Goward on April 3

The shelter has 19 beds for families escaping domestic violence. Its $400,000 annual budget will be funded by the State Government through Women’s Community Shelters and the community.

Year 11 English Studies joined with kindergarten students from Bethany Primary School to celebrate National Simultaneous Storytime. The English Studies students designed a range of activities appropriate for a young audience based on The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel. This morning kindergarten sat enthralled as our students read the book and engaged in lively discussions concerning the ideas and values expressed in the text. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all. @Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

Year 10 took a deep dive into careers and pathways at the Greater Western Sydney Careers Market at Cambridge Park this week. This was a valuable and timely chance for students to start thinking about their post-school pathways, especially as they prepare to make subject selections for Years 11 and 12. With hundreds of post-school options on display — from employment and traineeships to apprenticeships, university, TAFE, private colleges and more — students had a fantastic opportunity to ask questions, gather resources, and get inspired about their futures. The event brought together a wide range of experts including universities, training organisations, apprenticeship centres, professional associations and employers — all under the one roof. Thank you to Brett Carter Events for organising such a powerful and informative showcase. Our students walked away motivated, informed and excited about what’s next! Our Year 11 Work Studies students had the privilege of hearing from College Alumnae Charmaine Alterator, who returned to share her inspiring career journey and real-world insights. From starting in retail to becoming a Branch Manager at Commonwealth Bank, Charmaine’s pathway is a powerful example of how skills, experience, motivation and qualifications can open doors and shape successful careers. Students gained valuable, practical advice on building a career from entry-level positions, the importance of networking and continuous learning, plus how diplomas and workplace experience go hand in hand. Her engaging presentation in-class was followed by a Lunch and Learn session that left our students motivated and better prepared for their own futures. A huge thank you to Charmaine for her time, generosity, and passion for mentoring the next generation. You’ve truly helped to kickstart their career journeys! Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese
