What's It Really Like to Send Your Kid to a Catholic School?

17 Jul 2026

news-17-07

If you've ever assumed that attending a Catholic school means you have to be Catholic and that the fees are expensive, you're not alone. It's a common perception, but for many families, the reality looks quite different.

You don't need to be Catholic to belong.
Catholic schools offer character formation that respects the religious and non-religious backgrounds of all students. Day to day, faith shows up through kindness, resilience, service to others, and a genuine sense of belonging, built through learning and social justice programs that let kids make a real difference.

The curriculum looks a lot like you'd expect.
Catholic schools teach the NSW curriculum and are proud of the academic achievements of our students. Religious Education is designed for students of any religious or non-religious background. For those students who are Catholic, it aims to support them in understanding their faith. For other students, it aims to help them learn more about a Catholic understanding of life.

Academic results speak for themselves.
Catholic schools consistently punch above their weight - strong HSC results, dedicated teachers and a genuine sense of community that means every student is known and supported.

The benefits last well beyond graduation.
A 2025 study using HILDA data found Catholic school graduates were, on average, more likely to be employed, reported higher life satisfaction and better general health, were more likely to donate to charity, and earned a 4-11% wage premium vs government-school peers after controls.

And the fees question - it's more affordable than people assume.
Catholic education isn't the exclusive, expensive world some parents imagine. Fees are kept as low as possible, with families paying less each day than they'd spend on everyday essentials like lunch or parking. Sibling discounts are available, flexible payment plans are standard and schools work with families experiencing genuine financial hardship. No family is turned away simply because of their inability to pay.

The bottom line:
Catholic schools today are inclusive, high-achieving, values-driven communities. The best way to see what one is really like is to experience it firsthand. Attend an open day or speak with staff about the programs and community that make each school unique.

To wrap up Semester 1, our 7Tech.E students enjoyed a visit to the farm! Students had the opportunity to practise safely picking up a chicken while also observing and learning about the other animals on the farm. It was a fantastic hands-on experience that brought their learning to life and was the perfect way to finish the semester.

Year 8 Formation Day was a wonderful opportunity for students to step away from their usual routines and enjoy the beautiful surrounds of the Edmund Rice Conference Centre. The day gave students the chance to reflect, grow, and connect more deeply with their faith and each other. The theme of the day was “Love is patient, love is kind”. Students were challenged to think about what real love looks like in their everyday actions, words, and choices.

Our Year 10 students gathered at Mt Schoenstatt for their Formation Day this week. On a cold and foggy day, we came together to reflect on our theme, “Walking in Their Shoes.” Throughout the day, students explored the meaning of empathy and the important role it plays in our everyday lives and relationships. A special highlight of the day was Mrs McElroy sharing the story of her dad’s treasured boots — a powerful reminder that every person carries their own story, experiences, and journey. Through pair work, small group discussions, and homeroom activities, students engaged in meaningful conversations and experiences centred on empathy, compassion, and service. We reflected on how our chosen charitable groups inspire us to put our faith into action and make a positive difference in the lives of others. Despite the gloomy weather, there was plenty of warmth in the laughter, conversations, and shared moments over our picnic lunch. We concluded the day with a beautiful and moving liturgy, leaving with a deeper understanding of empathy and a renewed commitment to walk alongside others with compassion, kindness, and faith.

Our Year 11 students enjoyed a meaningful Formation Day focused on the theme: The Joyful Way: A Path to Peace. Through reflection, prayer, creativity and connection with others, students have been exploring the deeper meaning of joy and how it can guide them towards inner peace. The day provided opportunities for students to reflect on the moments, people and experiences that bring them authentic joy. Through activities such as Biblical Micrography and creating their own Joy Maps, students have been encouraged to celebrate the gifts of joy, gratitude and hope, while reflecting on how they can continue to walk the joyful way throughout their journey at Caroline Chisholm College and beyond.

Our Year 9 students recently participated in a meaningful Formation Day centred on the theme of discovering the wonder of 'Being stewards - Caring for our Common home'. Through a range of engaging activities and shared experiences, students were encouraged to pause, appreciate the beauty of the natural world, and reflect on the relationship between God, humanity and all of creation. Inspired by the Catholic call to stewardship, students explored what it means to care for our Common Home, recognising that each of us has a responsibility to protect and nurture the environment as a precious gift from God. They reflected on how small, everyday actions can contribute to caring for creation and living out our faith through respect for the world around us. The day also provided valuable opportunities for students to strengthen relationships within their Homeroom groups, fostering trust, collaboration and a deeper sense of belonging within our College community. By working together, students experienced the importance of caring not only for creation but also for one another. It was a wonderful day of faith, reflection and community, encouraging our Year 9 students to grow as compassionate stewards of God's creation and to embrace their role in caring for our Common Home. "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it." – Psalm 24:1

On the last day of History, Year 8HSIE1 students celebrated their learning by creating fabric swatches inspired by traditional Khmer dress. Drawing on the intricate patterns, vibrant colours, and elegant designs of Khmer textiles, students combined creativity with their understanding of Cambodia's rich history and culture. Their unique designs reflected both artistic talent and a deeper appreciation for cultural heritage. A wonderful way to conclude the semester by bringing history to life through creativity! #HistoryIsFun
